Vehicle Accident Procedure

I just read in the recent Gringo Gazette that nearly 90% of the vehicles in Baja have no insurance and in the case of an accident, no means of covering those expenses. It also mentioned that car insurance is not mandatory here as it is in most states in the US.
I believe I've read somewhere that an accident is considered a felony in Mexico and that's why most drivers choose to handle it themselves rather than bring in the police.
I guess my question is; if we, (insured Gringo's) become involved in a vehicle accident, what is the recommended procedure to follow for an accident where there is damage to the vehicles but no injuries?

Just do it!

If there is alot of damage, most locals just disappear and leave the vehicle cause they will go to jail if they can't pay and the police are involved...maybe you can get a nice lot out of it:spingrin:

An amicable trade can benefit both parties. They don't go to jail, and you might actually receive some form of compensation. :light: CaboRon

You've discovered one of Mexico's dirty little secrets and why gringos are required to have insurance. The procedure will be dictated by the aggrieved party which, regardless of circumstance, won't be you.

Having said that, I've settled minor fender benders on the spot. Much easier to pay one person than two. ;D

But...My vehicles are registered in Mexico. The question of insurance never came up.
