Businessman's Body Found With Valuables In Tijuana Field

March 4, 2004

SAN DIEGO -- There are more questions than answers after the suspicious death of a San Diego businessman in Tijuana.

Friends of the dead man said that the last time they heard from Mark Spizman was when he called for help from inside a Tijuana jail. He was later found dead in a field in Tijuana.

"I think he was scared and nervous, and just wanted to get out of there," said Kimberly Alexander-Stump, a friend of Spizman.

Alexander-Stump told NBC 7/39 that Spizman called asking for $1,300 to be bailed out of a Tijuana jail. Spizman told her he had been thrown in the jail after he had been in a car accident and couldn't prove that he had car insurance. She said that her husband drove down to Tijuana to bail him out. She said her husband spent nine hours in Mexico shuttling between the jail and a nearby police station, only to be told that he was in neither location.

Spizman was found dead the next day in the middle of a Tijuana field with his wallet and other valuables still on him. Spizman's autopsy results list trauma to the head as the cause of death.

Alexander-Stump told NBC 7/39 that she hopes her friend's death will prompt Americans to be more cautious when crossing the border.

"Don't take it for granted that you're going to get help," said Alexander-Stump. "Don't take it for granted that you're going to be allowed to make any phone calls. You are totally at the mercy."

The victim's friends say they are afraid they will never find out what happened to him.

"I don?t think we're ever going to know," said Alexander-Stump.
