What are these bumps? Hives??

Okay, I'm stumped and I thought of your guys before I try the doctor or the farmacia ... since some play experts on the internet.

We went to friends' palapa near the beach, but kinda jungle-like location, for an impromptu bar-b-que. It was just after the storm and mosquitoes that seemed to love DEET were hovering and feeding off us as we enjoyed our chicken dinner. We began to itch on our backs fiercely. Now we are both covered in what could be bites, but seems like more since it has covered my back like a map of the planet. We are getting some relief with aloe gel or whatever we try, but it's mostly temporary.

Any of you have stories that might help us with our problem? Do bobos or whatever have a more venomous bit after a storm? Amir says he had something similar last year as well. :?:

Sorry, if you were expecting pics ...

Sounds like sand fleas or Bobos.
Sand fleas get your ankles and legs unless you sit or lay in the sand.
Bobos tend to get your neck, shoulders and back/chest as much or more.
Try getting some benzodryl lotion or old fashioned Calamine.
And yes, you will often see a bloom of new critters after a rain or sometimes they can be blown in from somewhere else by the storm winds.

Sounds itchy !!

Most of the critters that bite, chew, etc. get your undivided attention when they chow-down for din-din. Your friends must have been providing some numbing refreshments. Give it a day or two and the bug bites will go away.:tumble:

If they left little red marks like freckles or Chicken Pox they are most likely sand fleas. Avon Skin so Soft used to be the remidy and prevention. Probably better stuff out now, it has been a while....everyone is right, they will go away in a couple of days but not quick enough..............

Sounds like jejenes aka no-see-ums. they are different than true sand fleas.

I've heard that the Avon product doesnt deter them; strong DEET is the best.

Any kind of white cream toothpaste applied early to each little bump works for me and many of my friends --- I have a tube in every room in the house. It works, try it.

Try the Solarcaine spray, after the fact.

If you're down in Mex, there are tubes of cream containing lidocaine that might work.

If the bumps are hard, elevated, with a dark dot in the middle of each one then it's some sort of insect bite. A rash is usually not circular and often is softer to the touch. Some of the itching from the bugs can last quite a whilee.

On the other hand you can develop a rash by scratching your bug bites too agressively if you are predisposed to rashes. That happened to me recently. I ended up taking cortisone pills as the rashes got too large to handle with cream.

When things get real bad I find that cooling down the area helps the most (and heat aggravates the situation). If things get too enflamed to tolerate just ice down the area. Stay in cool, air conditioned room until things start to recover.

Don't laugh! After all that stuff above and you're still itching like crazy make a paste out of aspirin. Rub it in the now festering sores. The aspirin will relieve some of the pain/itching and it will dry up the festering sores. Just brush off the old and reapply as needed. Works great on cold sores too.

several suggestions sounded great. then i read russ's and found it the most ingenious. until i read his definition of a balanced meal: a cookie in each hand:lol::lol::lol:

can't trust his prescriptions because of his definition

Thanks everyone for all the great tips, remedies and amusing thoughts. I liked the staying cool one the best. Too bad that would mean staying in our car all the time with the AC on ...

I think Skipjack Joe is right that we both might have sent regular insect bites over the edge to a rash. Will take it easy with the sharpened bamboo back scratcher next time ... oooo ... it's hard to resist still. I think perhaps my Scotch/Irish/Germanic and Amir's redhead Hungarian skins are a bit heat sensitive.

Well, at least we've picked somewhere to live that that shouldn't be too much of a problem ...

Being in BCS is like being a baby again. So much to learn. Growing up in Ohio I used to get "chigger" (sp??) bites and occasional flea bites from pets' fleas. This chapter has brought back memories of humid, itchy nights back then. I like this much better.
