Punta Abreojos

I'm thinking of doing a kayak surfing trip to Punta Abreojos next spring. I've looked on the internet for any information and don't find much. My questions are:

1) is there a mercado in the village?
2) is there a water store? an ice store?
3) I assume I can camp on the beach. Is there anything I should know about that?
4) Can I kayak into San Ignacio lagoon or is that off limits to any but licensed pangeros?
5) How good/bad is the road from the highway?

Thanks for your help.

There are Nomads in Abreojos or who go there often... so get the best information from them ('Whistler' is one).

I can tell you that I went through there last July, and it is a big town with a paved main street.. lots of markets... people were camping on the beach that forms a point just before getting to town.

The road was paved to within about 10 miles and in great shape.

Campo Rene is a great looking camping and launching place, on Estero el Coyote... a few miles before getting to Abreojos and less than 3 miles off the highway.

I have photos and details here on the Baja Nomad Baja Trip Reports forum...

I was there while just after the red tide. It was not pretty but take any "devestation " reports with a grain of salt. There were boats going out past the tide just a couple of days later. I would venture a guess at the season being impacted but surviving nicely. The town has everything you will need as far as supplies of water, and ice (Ice is civilization after all). I hesitate to tell you this but Abreojos and the surrounding areas are quite possibly the nicest in Baja. Beautiful, and kind, and that is just the people. I have never driven into PAO, so I cannot give you a road report, but even if the road is bad, it is worth it. Fishing, surfing, esteros, whales, and gorgeous beaches, this is the real deal. I hope you make it to Abreojos, and have a great trip.

Launch your kayak where he's telling you.

This is campo rene. The cabins are $20/day. After a hot day of kayaking just sit back at this wonderful spot, enjoy a beer or two, and watch the bird life.

This lagoon is a kayaker's paradise and it's only a few miles south of town (maybe 3).

Enjoy.

Whistler,

I thought about that during my lunch hour but didn't think anyone would bring it up.

We have a similar situation in the San Francisco Bay Area. Highway 101 runs north to south from mexico to canada, right? However, in the south bay, around Los Gatos, it temporarily turns to east and west before changing back to north and south. So, the freeway on ramps in the area would tell you east and west. It was the most confusing thing. I could never decide which ramp to approach to go north.

The above may not seem like a big deal until you end up on the freeway going the wrong way. I don't know if others complained to Caltrans but I no longer see those east/west onramps any longer.

Like the 101 highway to Ventura from L.A. ... It is the freeway heading NORTH, but Ventura is to the WEST... The direction labled on signs should be the overall direction, not the local odd jog it may make.

Sat right at that table with that beautiful view of the lagoon enjoying a tasty meal exactly one month ago.

Thanks for posting the photo!
