WOW!

I'm shocked this made the Tribune. There has been a concerted effort to keep this quiet. ;)

WTF is going on down there? Up until this point, I could say in response to all these stories, hey, the crime is worse most places north of the border. No mas. I hate to say it, but I'm no longer stopping anywhere north of Ensenada. This is ridiculous.

Dave, I have to say that if they were trying to keep this quiet, I can only assume there have been more such incidents. And it looks like it was a wise choice for you to shut your doors.

If you're trying to simply be cryptic, you've succeeded.

However, the brazenness of this IS astounding. Broad daylight.....middle of a restaurant? I wonder if the son or daughter-in-law figure into this.

We sold the building.

Kidnappings do happen with regularity though not normally involving tourists. It's possible the kidnappers were after the other guy. We may never know because these things are usually resolved privately.

IMO, the victims were fortunate. The only thing worse than being kidnapped from Puerto Nuevo is being kidnapped and taken to Puerto Nuevo.

Here is a report from "La Voz", the newspaper here in Mexicali.

It has two stories. The capture of some kidnappers by local police; then another story regarding the kidnapping near Rosarito at the bottom of the same page.

The direct link (in Spanish): http://www.oem.com.mx/lavozdelafrontera/notas/n456467.htm

And the story translated by google: Link

An Eyewitness Account

of the kidnapping.

An armed group chased the minivan down the street in Puerto Nuevo, in front of Puerto Nuevo #1, firing as they ran.

The minivan passengers were composed of men, women and children.

Some of the van passengers were injured by the gunfire and the broken glass.

Now, veering out of hearsay into speculation, the Spanish tourist was not the target of the attack - that is why he was dumped by the side of the road.

The target was a wealthy, well-known local businessman - for purposes of ransom (see any number of news stories on this subject and why it is happening).

In my humble opinion, I think that it is a blessing that the kidnappers released their non-target unharmed.

Kidnapping... more to the story

Yes, there's always more to the story. I don't know how true this is--- it's just what I heard.

My motorcycle mechanic works on bikes es for the TJ police dept and I asked him about this incident while he was workin gon my bike in Rosarito last Monday. He said the two Spainsh men were with the US family in Puerto Nuevo. One of the Spanish men is involved with currency trading whcih is apparntly a way the drug gangs launder their money. They kidnapped the two Spanish men. The man they didn't want they beat up and let go later that night in TJ. The mechanic said the kidnapped man who was the intended victim was already dead.

Again, it's just what I heard. And this doesn't mean Americans just minding their own business here and trying to retire in peace don't get kidnapped in Rosarito. I had an attempt against me in January and I still worry. Everyone tells me that people here sell information about us gringos to the bad guys (corrupt police and drug gangs). Given the low wages- I don't doubt that we are targets to some extent.
