First of all you need SKYPE....it tells all and is about 2 cents a minute. I could not live without SKYPE!!! and a computer of course...to call another computer (no charge) or landline or cell phone.

I believe Skype calls to Mexico land lines and cell phones are quit a bit more than 2 cents a min. 11.4 cents to land lines and 38.6 cents a min. to cell phones. (just checked the rates)

Actually calling from Can. to Baja is at no charge for the receiver in Baja if it is on his /her cel.
Importrant is to have a one, 1, added inbetween the numbers.
I.e from canada 01152 includes the land code, then a 1 plus area code e.i. 612 for La Paz Todos Santos and local #
we dial 10 10 925 infront of all this and get charges about 12 ct. per minute.
No idea as to how to from a cel to mex. Not a good idea, way too expensive.

Barbara - the rates you quote are EVCLUDING VAT the taxes that will be applied. The ones I quoted INCLUDE VAT - this is what you will be paying.

Bajalou,

VAT, Value Added Tax ?:?::?:
Does that also apply in Canada, since the calls originate there.:?::?:

Since Mexico has a VAT on all purchases, I believed it would be added. I'm in the US and ran a test and they did NOT add the VAT to the rate. Sooooo looks like we escape the dreaded VAT and Barbara's rates are correct.

Yes, Ed.
From Canada; add at least 6% GST and different provincial taxes, depending on where from the call is. i.e. 7% from British Columbia. Zilt from Alberta.

Leo,
Didn't realize that the GST and provincial taxes also were applied to long distance phone calls. Well, never too old to learn.:(

gust for gee whiz, I believe the reason the skype rates are so high when calling Mex Cel phones is because Slim changed things earlier this year where the caller pays the cel phone charges. In the past it was cheaper, but the cel phone receiving the call paid the roughly 30 cents per minute.

I am a Skype user and I love it. If you are serious about it check out the Skype phones. We have a netgear and it is great. Our local Mexican number and our Skype numbers all ring on the same phone and we don't have to have a computer going to use the phone, nor mess with the headsets.
