Neighborhood

Alas, the ultimate disturbing the peace. I wonder if they have the required permits to come ashore on park islands. Hmmm.

They are watercraft like any other. It's up to the rider to show some responsibility.

Don, were they hot doggin' around being a nuisance? Or did they use the jet ski's as transportation?

We have two and really enjoy them, and we ride responsibly.

Haven't had a bad trip yet....

While we were in Todos Santos down at Cerritos beach there was this idiot Jimmy, I think someone told me was his name, who launches his jet ski off the beach there. He was jumping the waves with surfers and swimmers in the water and some times he couldn't even see who or what was behind the wave as he smashed thorugh it. Some American gal died of a drug overdose at his house one night during one of their all night raves. Did I mention I think he is and idiot???

Speaking ONLY for myself, here's my problem with them;

The jet skis, or as they are called in Baja, "jet skys" are obnoxious and noisy. The drivers tend to run back and forth, back and forth, and then, back and forth directly in front of camp. I don't want to group all jet ski users into one catagory, BUT most of the operators are not aware of swimmers or fishermen, or people who like to sit at the edge of the water and enjoy life without a waterproof lawn mower running back and forth like chewing corn off a cob in their horizon.
If you get on the beast, then take it somewhere! Go fishing with it, put it to some use other then pretending you're an old fashioned noisy typewriter going back and forth.
Loud, obnoixious and annoying. In my opinion, that's what the problem is.

The problem is, for me, that people with these toys tend to use them to their max in populated areas. They arn't meant for off-shore. They're meant for shoreline activities.
In a quiet environment, they have a ruinous effect, like seeing a motocross in a city park.
They are so loud. And dangerous.
I think I remember MrBill saying that they turn the innocent riders into outlaw bikers. How right he is.
I know they're fun but they have no home on a populated shoreline.
There should be areas set aside for parents who want to teach their kids and themselves to be agressive with vehicles.
They should include body armor with those nasty pieces of crap. It would be a prudent piece of equipment.

I have seen them endangering lives and making noise at Punta Chivato. Last year I saw one circling round and round a poor whale that had come into the Bahia de Concepcion at Playa Santa Barbara. The whale had nowhere to go. He was trapped. I tried to yell at the idiot to stop, but he either didn't hear me, or more likely for that mindset, he was ignoring me.

This is the ultimate projection of the Manifest Destiny mentality; Survival of the fittest; "We are the masters of nature and it is there for our use, abuse and amusement." :fire:

Bob H, I think Paulina and Dennis have said it pretty well. Loud, obnoxious, and most of all dangerous to other people in the area. I have to disagree with Dennis in one respect. I don't think jet-skiers should be allowed to use body armor, they should be in as much danger of injury or death as the people nearby that they put at risk. I'd rather not be so callous, but these riders bring out the worst in me. I could see them from a distance as we approached the island today-- fast moving wakes close into shore. As we came in there were many swimmers and snorkelers in the water. These guys didn't seem to care.

Bajaguy, ATV's are OK as transportation, but hot-rodders on the beach during a sunset walk aren't my personal favorite thing:no:

But I admit to being something of a luddite. I'm not even that crazy about my computer, except for e-mail , Nomads, and shopping.

In addition to the noise pollution, one of the reasons that they were banned on Tomales Bay (Marin County) and the Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary was because of the inefficiency of the engines that emitted unburned fuel into the water and air. They also interfered with nesting shorebirds and scared off pods of whales, and had pretty bad accident and injury rates. I'm sure there are some places where they could be used, but they don't belong in marine sanctuaries, or a national marine park...maybe theme parks would be a better plan.
