Heading South
I am getting ready to head South with my wife and some friends and would like some feedback if possible. We will be in 2 4X4 vehicles and a total of 6
people. We are leaving Nov 30th from San Diego with our final destination being Los Cabos. My questions are as follows:
1. Is it possible to make El Rosario in 5-6 hours?
2. from El Rosario can we make Scorpion Bay in one day?
3. Once in SB are there any accommodations other than the palapas?
4. What would be the safest surf breaks along the way?
I will be traveling with my wife and sister in law or else I wouldn't be asking. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1. Yes. 5-6 hours is just about right from San Diego to El Rosario at a nice leasurly pace. (Stop for tacos in Ensenada, etc.)
2. Yes. You can make it to SB in a long day.
3. No four star resorts. (Yet!)
4. The are no surf breaks close to the road from El Rosario south until you get to the turn off to Santa Rosalallita.

If you arent' in a big hurry, you can surf here in Asuncion and it's real safe, you can camp or stay in a beach house (the girls will love it!) but
it's an hour and a half off highway 1.

All depends how and what you drive.
This time of year if you go in the north road, you have to leave very early to make sure you don't get stuck on the salt flats with darkness
approaching- no bueno.
If you go all the way around the south road, it'll take 14+ hours. Add another hour if the 17 mile stretch of dirt hasn't been graded in the previous
couple of days (you're more likely to win lotto than to catch it freshly scraped).
Stop in Concepción or Loreto for the night and it's only 3-5 hours the next day.
3. Once in SB are there any accommodations other than the palapas?
No hotels and not alot of options for 6 people. There are a couple of possibilities (do internet search for rentals) but you'd definitely need
advanced reservations. It's a popular time of year, and people often use their homes themselves or for family.

Thank you for all the great advice. We will be traveling in a Rubicon and a Tahoe with good tires and suspension. I don't want to rush anything, but
also want to be safe. I am making a reservation at the BajaCactus and from there I will see what is available in San Juanico.(we will have camping
gear just in case). does anyone know where I can get a fishing license? I would like to do some surf fishing on the way down.

Just out of curiosity are you planning on surfing at Scorpion Bay? The reason I ask is that it only picks up south swells or big southwest swells, and
is pretty much dormant in the winter season. You might want to rethink your destination if surfing is on the agenda for that part of the trip......

Surfing is just the bonus. If we happen to find some waves somewhere along the way then great, but mostly we are just going for the road trip and a
few days in Cabo. We may breeze through Scorpion Bay if there are no waves. We are staying at the Cabo Surf Hotel. I know that it is hit or miss there
too. We are all from El Paso, Texas, so surfing isn't a must. I lived in Cali for a time, but am the only one really interested in surfing.

if there arent any waves at old mans, or the rock (cabo surf hotel), take a trip to the pacific side and surf cerritos.....youll get waves one way or
another.

A few days in Cabo!?!
It's a long, long drive from Scorp to Cabo. You're lucky to make Todos Santos by dark, and the traffic from Todos to SJdC is heavy. I have never been
to Ascuncion, but you may have a better time there, and get in and out of there much quicker. If you're camping, you may want to forget about
Scorpion, and head out of Muluge/Loreto on the third day and go directly to the East Cape. Great camping and surf fishing there. Then go "luxuriate"
at the cabo surf. Be careful about the food choices.....muy expensivo...personally, I think that place is a dive, but I like to sleep with fish guts,
so go figure.....

We will be gone for 9 days. I figure that will give us time to get down there and let the girls relax by the pool a bit. I prefer mosquito nets
myself. It looks like we will be staying in Loreto and passing through Scorpion. We shall see. Leaving Thursday.

San Juanico is way out of your way, taking the north or south road. You might check Surfline just before you leave to see if there is any chance of
surf. When I was there in Sept a new hotel was being built, probably not completed yet. You can rent rooms in the house at the campground.
