Buses stoned in TJ

PBS News: Greyhound buses are being stoned shortly after crossing into Tijuana. Company reports broken windows on 30 vehicles. Taxistas reacted similarly in the past to US competition.

buses

Under the name, "Crucero" Greyhound has been servicing Tijuana for years. I used to use them in the mid eighties. I'm not sure when they adopted the name. They had one route from the main bus terminal in TJ to the Greyhound terminal on Broadway in San Diego. They had their own ticket window at the TJ end. Northbound passengers had to get off at the border, walk through customs, and then re-board the same bus on the other side. Same system at the TJ airport. The red buses, which shuttle from US parking lots into central TJ, have also been running for a long time.

the meat of the story...

November 24, 2007

TIJUANA – Mexican authorities are investigating a series of rock-throwing attacks on cross-border buses that shuttle tourists through Tijuana.

Tijuana's police chief, Victor Zatarain, said police are investigating.
No one appears to have been injured in the attacks, though the rocks have shattered bus windows.

Zatarain said a similar round of rock attacks took place last year. When the police presence increased, the problem went away.

Zatarain said he didn't believe the attacks were part of an organized effort to target tourists. “These are isolated cases of people who don't have work and who do this kind of thing,”
