HIGH SPEED INTERNET IN ASUNCION..roads fixed after rains

WHOOOOEEE..boy am I excited...high speed internet has finally arrived...gosh now I won't be able to read a book at the computer...whew. Both internet cafes have it as well...what a huge difference. Mine should get here next week. The village is in clean up mode after the heavy rains washed tons of mud into our newly paved main street so the guys are out with pick axes breaking it up and hauling it away...which will be a huge job. Our drive to San Hipolito yesterday was a challenge with lots of places washed out and huge pools of deep water in places, you have to go around through the desert...off roadin...yahooo. Many very dangerous washouts..drive slow and in the day.

Sounds exciting. My kind of Baja. I'm still planning on driving down. Desert should be beautiful after the rain.

Yeah, I just ordered mine today...they send you the modem and it's 300 pesos a month to rent the equipment.

Gee Shari, now you can see all those photo filled web pages and Nomad posts that took too long to open before! Google satellite images pop open fast with high speed also... You can 'fly' all over Baja from your PC with high speed and Google Space or Google Earth in 3-D! Congratulations when you get it hoooked up!

So they ran the DSL through the regular phone lines? I thought Jose Luis said it would be different.

I wonder if he will still be able to set up the community wi-fi?? It will be interesting.

I think we are going to need to wait for the land line---lines too far away right now.

But, at least it will be fast at the cafe for now---

Diane,
Any good amigo with a DSL connection (like Shari) can intall a wireless router and you can pick it up any time of day with a directional antenna from your house.
Jose Luis may do the same thing.

Slow down on the curves!

We had a tough go of it on our trip to San Hipolito and had to go across desert a few times to avoid wash outs and huge deep puddles...this corner would be pretty dangerous coming from the top of the hillif you werent going slow.....

This is like Chrismas eve when I was a kid...I couldn't sleep last night thinking of all the stuff I can do now with high speed internet...I got up at 5:30 to get at it this morning...so if I seem bleary eyed to you Nomads coming for Christmas...well...just drag me by the hair away from this screen! My next question is...if I put it in our beach house, it will cost a bundle to get a phone and modem, computer etc...and I was wondering if guests would agree to pay for the use of it instead of going to the internet cafe? Or should I raise the rent? Seems unfair to raise the rent for those of you who won't use internet, but lots of guests use it...your thoughts?...remember we are NOT wealthy...just getting by...but wanting to give a good service.

Shari, with dsl, you aren't far from having wifi or equal provided there is a market for it. 34+ usd/month which if you put in a dsl connection would be a fair charge to a visitor spread across a month so daily rate would be ???

Interesting ideas, Shari---Diver posted on Russ' thread about antennas etc. Wish I really new more about this.

My computer can pick up wi-fi so it there was a way to pick up your wi-fi with that great DSL high speed, we would have no problem paying for it---rather pay you than Jose Luis---an you know how much I would like high speed and at home! We know it would take some more equipment because we are two far away, and there is that Diverlandia hill between us. I wonder..........

Hey Diver, here is what I am ordering to help out with the Wifi stuff at the Beach house which my guys say should work at reasonable cost.
1 unit - Netgear # WGR614 (Standard Wireless G 2.4GHz Router)

1 unit - D-Link # ANT24-0700 (2.4GHz Omni-Directional 7 dBi Indoor Antenna – it’s on a 1.5 meter extension cable.
I hope that will be powerful enough if put in the right window to get it out to places within a couple hundred yards
