sleeping/drinking upstairs-need to pee
Didn't want to butt-in on Oladulce thread so...
My place in BOLA has a nice upstairs porch which is great for sleeping under the stars. The problem is the watermarks from relieving ourself over the
deck rail at night are right in front of our main hang out spot.
I was thinking of rigging up a large clamshell with tubing down into a rock/gravel filled pit down below. The clamshell will turn the urinal into a
decorative/hidden device. We usually only go for 1-3 weeks at a time so I'm hoping the pit won't get to stinky. The clamshell will be in a corner
making it unavailable to our female friends without the use of a second container.
Any ideas from you sanitary engineers?
No, I will not stumble downstairs everytime.
Thanks
Martyman

Martyman,
My only question is if you are married or have female company hanging it over the rail! My experience, though limited, has been that females without
proper water closets don't stay around very long.
If you have no water up there, I am curious if a plumbing/sanitary expert on Nomad has ideas.

Run a long garden hose out and away, with a funnel in the end.

Make sure to put that funnel on the right end.
Even for guys it's hard to pee in the end of a hose.

No water. My wife gets carsick so she doesn't want to go until we have longer then two weeks so we can drive in small stints. It is kind of a guys
fishing shack but my two friends are taking their girl friends in February.
I like the garden hose idea though.

Rig a "Johnny Tube". Like the old fishing cattle boats had.
It's a pipe installed (PVC) from your deck to the ground that flows wherever you want it below, even shallow or deep into the ground so it can perk
down later.
For the ladies, perhaps a bucket with seat, or a porta potty.
Are we really talking about this?
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

It's easy. Just run length of pvc up to where you want it. Fit the upper end to an expander to fit a great big piece of pipe. Cut that wide pipe to
the shape of a urinal and attach it to the wall or railing. Run the opposite end of the pipe to your neighbor's lot. Just kidding. Snake the other end
to a cleanout or anything else that leads to the sewer. Run a water hose with a spray nozzle upstairs to rinse the whole works out after each use. I
wouldn't try to use it for #2 though.

For your lady guests info: When that was my mom's casa, she used a Luggable Loo in the evenings. Those stairs were too steep for her to attempt in the
middle of the night.
The lid is available at Cabelas.com. It snaps onto a 5 gal. bucket. If you use a kitchen sized trash liner, it's easy to change it out every morning.

Marty, this wouldn't be pretty much a fishing "shack" by any chance?
I think I'd walk the walk with the girls.

In wet climates your tube to the ground works, but in desert climates it is a total disaster. What happens is the urine hits the ground and because
it is so dry, you get crystals about like small crystals of salt ( pretty apt I'd say) and they sit there in the dry heat but as soon as there is any
humidity, they dissolve and the smell becomes very strong.
We put up a semi-permanent trailer in a campground and the previous camper there was too lazy to walk up to the restrooms so urinated on the ground
in a particular area. Three years later I was still fighting to get rid of the odor which would reach unbearable proportions. After carrying a lot
of water and buying some very expensive enzyme that is used for cat urine I was able to get rid of most, but not all of the odor.
I used to guide in the Grand Canyon and the government found the same issue of rafters urinating in the sandy beaches. They got so bad that you
could not sleep on the sand without becoming acutely aware of an overpowering urine smell. The Mexican government had a copy of the same study and
has required all commercial kayak trips that camp on the islands to instruct all campers to urinate below high tide mark.

With PVC nowadays, it's pretty simple to put in a toilet, if you don't mind some exposed water and sewerline. Basically, a kid can do it.

Martyman,
You know that door that is upstairs, just as you come to the top of the stairs, on the right hand side? It opens to nothing. She always wanted to
enclose that area outside that door for a mini bathroom, but never got around to it. Maybe that could be a project in the future?

While we were building our house in Ensenada and still didn't have the bathroom functional we just kept a plastic cup by the back window, peed in it
and threw it over the side. Just had to make sure the wind wasn't blowing into the house and that there was no one close by that could get a little
"over spray". Never was a problem. The only time we had a problem with this was when I had to go #2 and my husband informed me I needed to go hang
my fanny over the open septic tank. I told him just what he could do about that!! Not nearly as sophisticated as the ideas mentioned above but it
worked great.
