Zihuatanejo
I know it's not Baja but has anyone been there? The weather looks good there right now. I wouldn't mind going to the East Cape area but it's windy.
My goal is to walk on the beach and catch shore fish. I don't really care what kind because I'm probably going to release them anyway.
And if I get bored with that I figure I can go to Ixtapa and check out the tourist hotel beaches for hotties.
Any ideas?
Anybody got experience flying out of Tijuana? Is it cheaper than the states? Is there safe parking near the US side of the border at Otay?
I figure walk across and take a cab or bus to the airport. Will that work?
I need some sunshine! I'm losing my tan. Plus, I'm going through one of my " I hate southern California and everyone in it " moods.

I also got a bug and wanted to look at another part of Mexico and thought Zijuatanejo would be interesting so I just started searching with Google.
Pretty interesting but I hope we get some first hand info back here.

We live at Posada Concepcion (near Mulege) nine month of the year, but we have a second Mexican place in Zihuatanejo...notice the H between the i and
the u...because it's too friggin' cold and windy here in the winter. We rent it out when we are not there. Z-town is a very friendly clean town of
about 60K folks. Unlike Ixtapa, some 20 miles away, there are NO high-rise hotels or gated Gringo-vills. It still has the flavor of a fishing
village, which it still is in many ways. Right now the days are mid-80's and nights are mid-70's. Summer months are about the same temperature
except that humidity moves in. Water is mid-80's year around. I could go on and on about how great this place is but I'm feeling guilty about being
off-topic on this Baja board. Email me directly or u2u for specific questions. We head that way shortly

I really like Zihuatanejo. Playa la Ropa, the beach in the bay, is beautiful but I don't think I saw anyone fishing:

Not real good for shore fishing, unless you can cast really well over the surf on the open pacific. Inshore, they are catching roosterfish and jack
crevalle (they call them yellowtail jacks) there, but the roosters will move out soon. Offshore, mostly good weather and sailfish, dorado, tuna. Good
place to be in January and February.

That's a real koinkydink, Pomp. That's about the same time as the one time my wife and I were there on something like a honeymoon. Not many hotels.
We stayed at a small Casa de Huespedes, slept on a big canvas cot. The best beach was Los Gatos. A lady in a small hut there cooked lobster for us.
After taking our order, she sent her son swimming out to where they kept a trap tethered to fetch a couple. I liked it a great deal better than
Acapulco, for which I've never really cared much. BTW, "Alex in TJ" married a girl from there. Haven't seen any posts from him in quite a while.
All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

Z-town or "z-WAH" as it's called...
Of the three beaches- the "public" beach, Madera beach and La Ropa (named for the clothes that washed up when a ship sank) is the best for beach
walking and swimming. There is really no bay fishing to talk about. For that remote feeling non-city folks like, and for good surf fishing (crevalle
& rooster), there are two GREAT beaches- both about 30 minutes drive away...one to the north - Troncones - and Barra de Potosi to the south.
Troncones has tons of places to rent. In fact that is about all there is there, from very fancy villas to modest bungalows...and all beachfront-

Barra de Potosi is seven miles of beach, and not much there really. Maybe 20 places to stay in the seven miles and most of them kinda pricey. At the
very south end, there is about a dozen palapa/sandfloor restaurants supported by the weekend bus tours from town. One is called Nieto's. Nieto has
six little studio bungalows with outdoor kitchens a half mile from his restaurant to rent- on the beach and cheap. We stayed there a month so he cuts
a good deal for longer stays. I'll dig up a pix to post of this place if I can find one.
For city dwellers, Zihuatanejo is fun because the pace is sooo sloooow (unlike PV for example) and you can walk to just about everywhere you want. In
Ken's La Ropa pix, the left-hand fifth of the photo shows the downtown area and the north end of La Ropa. The pix posted here is from my La Ropa

The airport- ZIH - is 20 minutes away from town. I have always driven down because we stay so long. If you do fly in, all the places can be had by
"coconut" buses and taxis if you don't want to rent a car. See you there

anyplace on the gold coast from mazatlan thru ixtapa-Z incl manzanillo san blas vallarta and even acapulco beats the heck out of chilly windy mulege
in dec jan........we are freezing here!! coldest winter visit in my memory of 27 years flyin down here!
can't wait to go to Z we've done the other towns along the coast in the plane - big fun.
skip the rainy season starts late june!! it pours every frickin day!!

shore fishing Zihua
As already mentioned, it's a bit different than shore fishing the Cortez. I'd go armed with a good surf casting rod of 10 feet or more rigged with
spectra for distance casting. There are some great roosterfish there, jacks, and at times lots of skipjack close to the beach.
All in all...Z is a cool place. Some damn good food to!

Okay! Great info. So I guess shore fishing is out. Maybe I can find someone to split a panga for some inshore.
I can't do any hardcore fishing because I'm still nursing a broken collarbone but some small light tackle fish might be fun.
Mostly I just want to convalesce on the nice warm beach and maybe some light free diving.
And the pretty girls on the beach thing too!

Okay the good info just keeps getting better! Looks like RT out of LAX is $348 which ain't bad considering how far away it is. I stopped at AAA for a
Mexico map so I'll study it for these other places. A cheap rental car is about $85 but I'm sure insurance is more.
So it's looking doable!

Okay just spent time researching. Ya, Troncones looks like the right place. Saw a room for $40/night at Tropic of Cancer Beach Club. Most of the other
little beachfront places were $100-$200. But I'm sure there is some little hotel back from the beach for $25/night.
