A personal tragedy...an insidious plot
Thu Dec 27, 2007 5:20 pm (PST)
Pacifico May be next...
MONTERREY, Mexico, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Femsa, Latin America's top drinks company, is
raising its Mexican beer prices in line with Mexico's projected 2008 inflation rate to offset
rising raw material costs, the company said on Thursday.
"The price increase is being implemented by region, channel, brand and package and its
weighted average will be equivalent to the expected general inflation for 2008," Femsa
(FMSAUBD.MX: Quote, Profile, Research) (FMX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said in a
statement.
Mexico's central bank says next year's inflation could be slightly above its 4 percent target
rate due to higher food prices and a planned fuel tax hike.
Some Mexican consumers and economists worry the fuel tax increase, albeit small, could
lead to rises in other product prices as companies try to offset the greater cost of
transporting goods and food.
Femsa, which produces Sol, Dos Equis, Bohemia, Tecate and Carta Blanca, said its price
rises would be fully implemented from January. The company blamed rising grain and
aluminum costs on world markets for the increases.
Femsa has three divisions: its beer subsidiary, soft drinks unit Coca-Cola Femsa (KOFL.MX:
Quote, Profile, Research) (KOF.N: Quote, Profile, Research), and a retail operation that runs
Latin America's largest corner store chain, Oxxo.
Billionaire Bill Gates recently took a stake worth about $390 million in Monterrey-based
Femsa. (Reporting by Robin Emmott; Editing by Braden Reddall

One could always buy Tecate beer for less in the US than Tecate , where it's made. What's up with that?
By the way....Reportedly, Gates bought 3.5 % of Femsa. The article didn't mention that.

Rumor has it he paid $390 mil for his 3.5%, although I have no idea where one could possibly find it in print.

Beer prices going up in UK too--higher grain and hop costs due to more land being used for biofuels, apparently.

Although I truly enjoy creative sarcasm, I was only pointing out a detail missing in the article above.

I'm stocking up before price increase. My evidence in my post this morning, not wanting to hijack yours, Al G. Is this plot to increase beer prices
something that the new Rosarito detectives can investigate?

Pacifico is $156mn/24 case of medias or 7.5/per single on average here on the east cape, ballenas are 13-15mn/per. Of course only girls drink medias,
men drink ballenas. Har har har
Time to head out to the beach and build up an appetite!

The price was already up in La Paz on Saturday and then they wouldn´t give me my deposit money back.... said the seventy peso deposit wasonly good for
three days.... who drinks a case of ballenas in three days? So I kept my empties and I guess will bring them with me to Todos Santos when I move
there in two weeks.

Invite me over. I'm sure we can empty that case within the 3 day time period!
