How bad are the baches?

I've been reading all kinds of news in the Frontera newspaper about the state of the potholes in Tijuana. It is quite a hot topic with the folks of Tijuana. People are writing comments about having to replace tires and broken rims and fix their suspension just from hitting these huge craters.

I know someone mentioned the potholes in a post a couple weeks ago, but I'm wondering how bad it really is on the cuota road from Tijuana to Ensenada. I would assume that the really bad ones would be on the local roads and that they would keep the tourist corridor well-tended, but you know what they say about assuming...

One of the comments in Frontera said that driving in Tijuana is like driving the Baja 1000 now...an adventure I wouldn't be too excited about!

Any info?

I think it's hysterical that people are worried about potholes in TJ. But I guess if you did hit a bad one, you'd get run over, robbed or killed while changing it. I drive in TJ all the times and there are some divots, but everyone seems to know where they are. I chuckle eveytime someone in a monster SUV veers around a hole the size of a mousepad- they;re more likely to tip over than suffer rim damage. JMHO though

Yep, I know most of the potholes around Mexicali pretty well by now. There are some big ones out there; but, its Mexico so you really should be ready for anything from a broken down bus to a giant unmarked pit that swallows the road whole.

The key to seeing potholes in the city is not to tailgate so you can see them in time and watch the cars in front of you to see if they make any erratic moves to avoid potholes. If you keep your eyes peeled, have a good navigator with you, and your keep your speed down you will be ok.

I'd be more worried about getting a fresh lime with your beer at the end of the road.

We drove through TJ in december and then down the toll road through ensanada and down to Loreto.I think the roads were pretty good. Last year the road from Mexicali to San Felipe was worse than the road through TJ and on to Ensanada.

Oh, they are quite serious about the potholes -- people are really upset about them! Here's a little video from Frontera on the condition of the roads and all the baches:
