Abreojos people?

http://www.mexfish.com/mfn/mfn2008/mfn080211/mfn080211.htm
this link is to Gene Kira's fishing weekly report - scroll to the bottom where he has a photo asking for help identifying this fish reportably caught near Abreojos 10 years ago. Someone from the university is requesting info about the photo.

That's easy, it is a Mero or black Sea Bass.

Goliath Grouper

Could also be Goliath Grouper, 'Epinephelus itajara'. They're found in the pacific from baja to peru.

See this Wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath_grouper

"The goliath grouper is totally protected from harvest and is recognized as a critically endangered species by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).[3] "

Whatever it is, it's a pity. The meat from an old fish like that can't be that great.

I don't think they are curious about the species, but about the photo. Don't think the type of fish is too much of a mystery.

And yes, it IS a pity. I wouldn't be caught dead in a picture like that - now would I ever bring a fish like that on board (assuming I could).

Roberto: I think you're right - the university didn't need to ask Gene to post a photo to identify the fish - just walk it over to the biology department??? Must be something about technique, where/how caught, etc.
