Deleting your own posts

I would like to suggest that, once there are responses to a post, the author not be allowed to delete the post. This seems to cause confusion regarding the content of a thread, sometimes to the point of rendering it valueless.

Not a bad idea. One message board that I frequent allows for editing and deleting, but only for a short time period once the message is posted. After that cooling off/ editing period is over, you are stuck with your original comment for everyone to read.

I know there are times that I felt like "taking it back", but facing the music with my posts taught me a better lesson.

Is she not behaving herself again? Careful, she might edit her post. :dudette: :P

Roberto, while I have been guilty of deleting whole posts and even threads I started, I really agree with you.

What is really irritating is when someone says something, someone else disagrees, and poster number one attacks poster two with a diatribe and meantime, edits his own posts---it does become very confusing. :?::?:

Then again, I am easily confused----and have learned that some people just can't stand any disagreement.

You have advised me more than once to get out of the mud, and it has been advice well taken.:yes:

One board I frequent will not allow editing of your post after someone replies SPECIFICALLY to your post. There is a drop down menu that allows you to assign who your post is directed at. "ALL" is also an option; not sure if that option locks out editing.

I think this is a case where if the software doesnt do it, no amount of coddling is going to make people comply. They WILL delete if they regret what they said or posted inaccurate info.

Any recent posts come to mind on this issue, Roberto?

Actually, I like that even better. if you need to retract/change something then post again stating that.

Doug, I know that it's easy to interpret this suggestion as specifically directed at ONE person, and to some degree it is, but don't you think it's a general improvement?

Guilty but I only removed the post because of zero response. I figured very few saw the post and it was up a very short time. Don't worry tho, I got fingered.
I know what you mean about confusing. Sometimes I'd really like to know what happened to cause the deletion and wtf it said.:saint:

Originally the person who began a new thread (a new post/ new subject) 'owned' that thread... and if he/she deleted that first post, all of the replies to it also deleted... "poof".

Doug gave in to complaints that some good stuff got lost if the creator of a new thread deleted it... So, he made it that all replies belonged to the person who replied and not the creator.

New problem cropped up that is being mentioned above, in that now you have a bunch of replies that no longer make much sense with the opening post gone!

Perhaps instead of taking away the ownership of one's own post or reply here (by preventing the deletion of posts/ replies), a *post deleted* note goes into the space where the post or reply was before it was deleted?

Frankly, I think some people just have nothing better to do than whine about what they see or want here... This place is for posting Baja information or stories... When it gets beyond that or goes to name calling or insults then that needs to go, as it is a violation of the board rules. That's the only whine I like, to ask Nomads to stop the insulting of fellow Nomads!

Nomad forums is HUGE with some stuff saved from 2002 when we first began posting here... Trip reports, details, historic photos and maps have value long after they are posted and it is wonderful to still go back to them... Nomad 'Search' works great.

The point is, the personal chit chat or anti-personal junk could all be lost and it wouldn't get missed as it has little to do to help plan a Baja trip or meet up with Nomads. The more of that kind of stuff that can be deleted the better... It all takes up valuable cyber-space that Doug pays for here.

If a problem gets solved, there is no reason the issue needs to stay up. If Nomads cannot delete something that was posted in anger or that got solved or smoothed over, then we will have both the original posts and then written retractions to fill up the boards with.

Delete the junk and get on with BAJA on Nomad!

Keep it as is... It's good to be able to delete stuff that sounds good during the heat of the moment until you cool off and realize how dumb you are for writing what you did.

Now, don't make me whine about partial quotes too!:lol::lol:

David, I'm making a suggestion that, while it certainly applies to you, as I've already said, has other applications as well.

Can we just discuss the merits of the suggestion, without calling other Nomads whiners?

And, if you think about it, making posts permanent once they've been made, could actually LOWER the incidence of negative posts. And I mean ALL such posts, not just the ones directed at you.

Although you obviously have wit and a high IQ and can figure such out, you would be amazed at the number of thank yous I get for taking time to add explanations and details ... not all said is obvious to everyone, afterall!:yes: Of course I have enough IQ to know the difference between sarcasm and a complement :lol::lol:

Now, how about something that is interesting to Nomads, like BAJA?

Excellent suggestion. I would carry it farther, locking it once anyone has read it, and disabling edits at that point, also. This being able to say one thing to part of the group and change it in the middle of the road, really confuses group process.

Yes, I am switching to Paulina's suggestion. All posts should be frozen after a (for example) 3 minute period, during which you could edit it, but not delete it.

If you are not prepared to stand by what you say, don't post. I STILL maintain that this will help the board.

And Nena, you seem to be in a very good mood today. Anything else you would like to say?:lol::lol::lol:
