Tijuana Shoot Out
I heard on the radio today that a five hour shoot out between police and drug dealers ended with two dead.
Anyone with more details please report. I hope FDT and family stayed out of harms way.

TIJUANA, Mexico – Mexican police and soldiers traded gunfire with suspected drug gang members Monday in a five-hour battle near the U.S. border that
left a police officer and one of the suspected criminals dead.
The shootout began at a house in a residential neighborhood of Tijuana, a drug smuggling hot spot across the border from San Diego. It started Sunday
night and went on until early Monday, police said.
President Felipe Calderón has sent thousands of troops and federal police to Tijuana and other cities in Baja California, Mexico's most violent state,
to fight warring drug cartels and clean up corrupt local police.
Tijuana has recently suffered a spike in violence. Drug gang hitmen broke traditional codes of honor in the city in January by killing children,
including a 3-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl.
Also in January, gunmen and more than 100 police and soldiers fought a three-hour battle outside a Tijuana kindergarten.
More than 2,500 people were killed in drug violence in Mexico last year and over 300 have died so far this year as cartels smuggling cocaine,
methamphetamine and marijuana fight each other for control of routes to the United States.

Yes, it happened again this time at Villa Floresta, an area of Otay in Tijuana, notes say that the shooting started when soldiers were going to raid a
house and were received with gun fire. The shooting lasted about 7 hours according to reports and it was in the early hours of the morning.

Is there a death sentence in Mexico? I mean the drug dealers seem to have no fear. What is the usual sentence for dealing....low level vs. high
level? I'm not for turning Mexico into a Singapore, but enough is enough. How about kidnapping. What's the max. sentence. There was a kidnapping in
San Quintin last week Monday or Sunday, while I was there. I hear the kidnappers want $300K dollars.

Let me see.......A seven hour shoot-out with one dead. Was he alone? Did he hold off a bunch of soldiers for seven hours alone?
If he wasn't alone, which one must assume, what happened to his buddys? Where did they go? Didn't the Army secure the perimeter? They only had
seven hours to do it.
This stinks.

Obviously you never attended a Mexican gunfight. The two sides stay barely out of range, shoot
hundreds of rounds [sounds like the forth of july] then retreat with both sides declaring victory.

Why Not? Turning Mexico into Singapore is exactly what is needed. They don't tolerate any BS in Singapore from anyone. What an amazing example if

I don't believe there is in Mexico.
You get sent to prison and you are reunited with all your homies there. You pay for everything I've heard, down to toilet paper. The rich dealers
are in there own little world.
In the states we have the death penalty and the offender is cared for, fed 3 hots a day, a blanket etc at the cost to tax payers of $40K a year for 20
years before sentence is carried out.
Hmmmm doesn't seem like much of a deterant for the carrier criminal on either side of the fence.
I wonder what should be changed???

No death penalty that is why the U.S. must agree for any offender to be extradited to them from Mexico, if the offender is a Mexican National, that
they will not seek the death penalty. They also do not have any unfit charges for juveniles like California so if they are into killing for gangs
they can not be tried as an adult and at 18 they are released. See something wrong with this such as train them young and then they have no fear when
adults doing such terrible crimes. Later--------bajafun777

At $40k / Year / per head, You'd be getting a WHOLE lotta biz, amigo. I believe it is well over $60 K / Year nat'l average in the US... or so I read
recently.... Boring reading, I know, but I also serve on the Id. St. Juvenile Justice Council..... (which is often an overwhelming task too....)
What should be changed....? That list seems to be getting soooooooo much longer the older I get !

The latest on the shootout from Mexican newspapers is this:
An Army unit showed up about 10:00 pm to investigate a home in a rather upscale Tijuana neighborhood, and they were met with gunfire. They were joined
by some 200 soldiers and federales, who surrounded the home and tried to gain entry; however, every time they approached, they were met by gunfire. At
one point, the exchange of gunfire went on for an hour straight. At around 3:00 a.m., most of the gunfire stopped, but the area wasn't secured until
5:00 or 6:00 a.m.
Apparently, one 'bad guy' was killed and one soldier had a minor injury involving shrapnel in the eye. Another 'bad guy' may have been injured, and
three men in the home were taken into custody. They are now trying to determine if all four men were kidnappers/criminals or if a couple were
kidnappees. Inside the house, they found all kinds of high-powered rifles, police/AFI gear, bullets, rifle cartridges, etc.
The death penalty is not currently used in Mexico and hasn't been since the 1930s; however, many Mexican citizens are calling for it to be reinstated
with all the recent violence.

As I mentioned above, it is my understanding that the death penalty is on the books for treason. Not a crime you see every day.
