Doug........Is there a way to not see posts of someone
that you would not really like to read. I'd really like (and I think others might too) be able to just not see the posts of some. I hate it when I'm
reading and enjoying a thread and then get blinded-sided by someone that seems to have no other reason to post than to be rude.

Look at the author's name on the left. If it's someone you don't like, move on. You'll be OK unless you have terrific peripheral vision.

| Well, one of our users here requested that in a future software update from the board software source....
and it looks like they are seriously considering it:

Hey Doug!
I request that the format be left alone. If there are incidences where people don't follow the rules or the intent of the rule you can deal with it
case by case.
But leave the free flowing spontaneity of the board intact.
Debra, I'm not trying to insult you. Maybe I didn't read the post you read but I haven't seen anything in here to hurt my feelings yet. Sorry.
And I'm sorry about the rude post. I hope it wasn't one of mine.
Oh yeah, lighten up a little

I agree with Debra!! I'm definitely not a lightweight in the sensitivity department, but as debra said, you can be reading along & enjoying a
post & then someone slips in an offensive post that ruins the entire thread for everyone; well, okay, maybe not
everyone, but many people who have any sensitivity to rude or offensive posts! Some on this site can tend to forget that
this is dual-sex site and that the membership crosses many generations, IMHO, there are posts which are totally inappropriate for teens to be reading,
just as there are posts which are offensive to the older, supposedly more hardened generations. We're all individual, and as such, we each have our
own unique level of tolerance. One mans' humor is another mans' reason to be offended! There are several people whose posts I'd choose never to view
if given the opportunity. Obviously, the board rules are not enforced to the exact wording of the rules, or many posters would have
been permanently banned for repeated offenses. A public apology can't "unring the bell" of words once they've been read, especially when the
offensive poster then immediately proceeds to move the offensiveness to other threads. Those who are proponents of the "If it offends you, don't read
it!" theory might consider taking the time to stop & absorb the fact that you can't know what's going to offend until it's too late! Telling
someone to lighten up only proves my point of individual offensive levels; obviously if someones' offence threshhold has been crossed, it's a personal
tolerance level that others don't need to understand, they should just respect that individuals feelings. Since monitoring can't be done to each of
our tolerance levels, I feel that having the capability to not view specific individuals posts would be a viable & welcome option. Doug could
consider using it as a helpful tool....if a certain percentage of posters have blocked any given person, then maybe that persons' posting privileges
should be permanently revoked. This is a great site with a wealth of valuable information....when it avoids the mens locker room mentality!

I agree with Bajamigo on this - if you don't want to read someone's post, look at the name first and read only those you do want to read.
And yes, I should follow my own advice more often.

I do regularly avoid a couple of posters
as bajamigo suggested....
IF there was an option for me to block MY seeing those posts - by name (without affecting others' viewing)... I know that I would use it. And I'm not
sure, but I imagine others besides LLegs and I would use the option too...
This is a fantastic forum... I browse it almost daily, and have since even before I "joined".... and I have tons of appreciation and respect for all
of Doug's work that we all benefit from. The only OTHER thing I do most every day with my computer is to check my Email.
Its all just stuff and some numbers.

And I don't !!
For the simple reason that when you would be able to turn off an ( in your opinion ) offensive poster and other folks respond to that ( again ,in your
opinion ) offensive post, the fluidity of that thread could be lost to you, since you have no way to find out what they are responding to. And before
you know it, the whole thread would turn to gibberish.
And I have found that an offensive post usually get responded to and the offender put in his place by some clever rebuttal.

Bajamigo and Nene,
I already avoid posts of some, the problem comes when you are in the middle of reading a thread and the "problem" comes in the middle. I have no way
of knowing the "offender" is on that thread. You only see the author of the topic and the last poster. I'm not asking that anyone be banned (that is
none of my concern) What I'm asking is there a way that I, and I alone can block someone I may not want to hear from. It would change nothing for
anyone else as far as what they read.
Fishbuck, I'm really not that sensitive. I'm just tired (as I said) of enjoying a post and then have to "listen" to the same old garbage (7yrs. of it
as I mentioned)
David, I'm sorry for hi-jacking your thread, I should have just posed the question to Doug (as I finally did)
Personally I too like it when someone says they will be "gone" for awhile and I can understand when someone is excited about a trip, Baja or not, and
want to share their excitment, what harm can that do?
When someone "vanishes" people wonder and sometimes worry (I've had my email and U2 "blow up" which caused a problem in the "old" days of not much
space in my email inbox, and little or no computer access while traveling.
Mean people suck!

And, don't I know that to be a fact. I wear a catchers mask when I'm on the boards and that's the main reason I still have my teeth.
This place is self-moderating to a certain extent. Members don't for long put up with my nonsense and I don't put up with theirs. It may sound like
bickering and back-biting to some but, it's how we converse with each other. It's a good blend, I believe, somewhere between Sunday School and a
kick-ass bar. Everybody has a moment at the lecturn. Not only that, I've yet to see a thread here that hasn't invited passionate discourse, joined
by those who try to interject some. Did anyone ever see a nasty word in one of Ken Bondy's threads? Or, Judy's flower photography? No.
I have to ask some here....Who would you hate if you didn't hate me? Who would be your release? You have to have some reason for coming back for
more. In a way, you thrive on the discourse. You enjoy it, I just know you do.
So, it's all part of the rap that we put together here. Opinions being shared.
Actually, it's all fun when one learns to navigate the environment and when it gets over the line, the mods take over.
Jeezo, folks. This isn't Bible class. It's Baja class, warts and all.

Rude Posters
Here's a recent Point-Counterpoint discussion on the issue:
Edward Wasserman, a professor of journalism ethics, thinks the rudeness of certain commenters detracts from the overall discussion: “The extreme
license given individuals to vent, dissemble, excoriate and indulge their hates verbally, winds up destroying the expressive freedom that other
people, less bold and less opinionated, need. ... The overall result is a less expansive, less robust sphere of expression and sound, worthwhile
thoughts aren't shared.”
The counterpoint commenter replied, "If someone isn't bold enough to express his or her opinion anonymously in an online forum out of fear of meanie
commenters, that person is a wimp. Sorry, it had to be said."
"Wasserman goes on to say there should be rules. But what about major news organizations? How should they police the smarter than you, more insanely
random than you, boring and bored? And frankly, are these people even worth policing. Do most Times readers care about the vocal group of
commenters?"
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness.”

\"La vida es dura, el corazon es puro, y cantamos hasta la madrugada.” (Life is hard, the heart is pure and we sing until dawn.)

This is pure crap. What this wimpy jerk is saying is that a strong vocal representation of an idea will drown out an intimidated responder resulting
in a "less robust sphere of expression."
Perhaps the responder should grow a pair.......vocal chords that is.
