You are only eligible for an FM3 You need to have a fideocomiso in order to get an FM2.

I didn't know that. You mean you can bypass FM3 if you have a bank trust?

fideocomiso has nothing to do with getting a FM2. Immigration Office (in Mexico) now says that you must have a FM3 for 5 years, then you can apply for FM2 if you desire. FM2 is to become Imigrado (permanent resident) or for Mexican Citizenship.

Bob is right as far as I know. I have had an FM3 for one year and will renew next year with an FM2 since my Fideocomiso will be done by that time.
I just came yesterday from the immigration office in Santa Rosalia with that information.

I just switched from FM3 to FM2 and they wanted a copy of my fideo. I had only had the FM3 for 3 years.

Do I have to say this.....of course, this was in San Lucas which may be different from where you are.

While I am at it, I have to say that the people in the San Lucas office are as nice and helpful as can be. There is even a lady who speaks excellent english for the spanish impaired. I agree with Osoflojo that this office is very easy to deal with.

edited to add:
Check out the restrictions on time spent outside Mexico for an FM2. You can only be outside of Mexico for a certain amount of time....that amount of time escapes me but I am sure someone else will know

When I got my FM2, I was told I had to get it stamped in and out each time and could only be out of Mexico of a total of 18 months in the 5 year period.

I will chime in on my experience here in Manzanillo. I just now returned from Migracion and didn't have any trouble applying for a FM-2 even though I have only had my FM-3 for 3 years.

Me too.... But they have no way of tracking it, at least yet. I was never asked for a fideocomiso for my FM3 or FM2.
