Can you still camp on the beach at Los Frailes? I did it about 8 years ago and had a great time and was thinking of going back. If not can you recommend good beach camping in that area. Thanks

Coral los Frailes south of Cabo Pulmo?
We did last October and it was awesome. Pulled the Bronco and tent trailer down the beach behind the palapa umbrellas and set up. Perfect!

I just drove by there and saw a few people camped out by the palapas on the beach. No military base/tent and have not seen one there anytime in the recent past. I'm pretty sure it's free.

Yep, we never saw anyone to pay if we wanted to. No Military base, just the fish camp in the arroyo. Be around your camp at the end of the day when the pangas start coming in. We just came back to camp from snorkeling up at the point and there was one panga coming in. I grabbed some money and ran up there as the trucks were backing on the beach with coolers as he came in very late compared to all the others.

I asked if fishing had been good or bad since they were in so late. The 3 pangueros all smiled and said fishing was great but they had a real bad time getting in as they were way out and the wind outside was very bad. I asked if they had anything they could sell me and they asked what I wanted. Curell if they had it would be nice. "Nope, but we have an Atun in this cooler on the panga". One guy opened a medium cooler full of ice with a 20lb or so tuna, blue fin I think? He said he would sell me one side of it. Sold, he filleted it and dropped a filet in my big zip lock bag that didn't fit. "How much, I asked?" "20 pesos". Huh? I pulled out the pesos I grabbed from camp and handed them to the one guy, it was 70 pesos. They all smiled and said they were glad they were late getting in. "Me too" I said and I walked back to camp with $100 stateside worth of ice cold fresh tuna. Shashimi and BBQ tuna for dinner was unreal.

Have fun!

Gadget, Coral Frailes they are now calling Los Arbolitos. It is not in Frailes but is near the Cabo Pulmo reef. Los Frailes is the next bay to the southeast and anybody can camp there and think it is free. Off and on there are guys at Los Arbolitos collecting money. That's a good thing not a bad one because for $5 you might feel better about people raping the park while the boss is asleep. The Curel (that's Jurel) have all been up this way (Palmas bay), the tuna you bought is yellowfin and if you enjoy it, whatever you paid is the right amount. My brother in West Palm Beach Florica just bought some dorado filets for $14.00 a pound and enjoyed the meal he cooked on his home bbq.
