Rental cars in La Paz?

My wife and I are flying into La Paz soon and need to rent a car for a week so we can drive to a friends house in Todos Santos, any body have advice or suggestions? Should we reserve a car at the airport or are there better deals to be found.

I reserved 1 yesterday at 25/day. Most were 35-38 but I kept looking. I think it was National. I'll check it and post.
Low end econobox with ac and auto.

Ya here it is:

My experience is that you will get a much better price if you make a reservation from the U.S.

i too did thrifty on line nov 2004 for baja 1000 and got $40 a day total with all the insurance taxes etc., i didn't want to go cheap and waive any of the optional collision and theft coverage.
if it is $50 a day today net net net its a fair deal.
in feb this year (or march - can't recall) i stayed cabo Azul los cabos and all the cars by the resort were $50 a day incl everything. they forced all insurance, no waiving. still a great deal if only to drive out to east cape on day jaunt.

They can do that? Even if you have other coverage like the automatic American Express collision and damage? :?:

That's because American Express is secondary coverage. If you use it they will charge a credit hold on your card and you are responsible .... after that you can ask AMEX for reimbursment.

I learned this in CSL and went ahead and bought Avis coverage.

what a drag,

CaboRon

I wanted to add that in the states it is a seamless transaction, and considered primary by the rental agencies.

It's $15 extra full coverage. Or $40 total.

Getting your car at the airport in La Paz adds a 10% airport tax. So in general it's less expensive to get your car from an in-town location.

I do Thrifty every year.... I just take the daily liabiity and have never been forced to do anything else... I have a car reserved for next month and have like a $210 per week rate...the rest I am covered under AMEX premium car rental insurance..DIFFERENT than just using your credit card.. Call AMEX and sign up...it's a flat charge of around $15.95 every time you rent car (differs state to state) and it covers you in Mexico.

That is a fairly new program and just another reason why American Express is such a great card to have.
