We recently remodeled our kitchen. Ana wanted gloss black cabinets and counters. We were able to talk some sense into her but still ended up with pretty much all black. Couldn't find anything here in La Paz in a solid counter top that fit the bill. We ended up going with floor tiles after seeing the same done at a friend's house in AZ.

  1. Lots of choices when shopping for tiling.
  2. Easy to find good installers in MX.
  3. Floor tile is very heavy duty and easy to care for.
  4. Cheaper than granite or Corian.

Finding trim is a bit of an issue but you can get creative. We went with some brushed nickel metal tiles. So far, we are very happy with everything.

Reasons why above kitchen could not possibly be in baja:
1. Still some wine left in bottle.
2. No place to clean fish.
3. Not a single bottle opener on side of fridge with coffee can below to catch tops.
4. Grout lines in floor and counter tops are perfect.
5. Grout at exposed edge of tiles does not run 1 or 2 inches up wall.
6. Complete absence of fruit flies around bananas.
7. Edge of counter top is not a line of Pacifico tops.
8. Electrical outlets properly spaced and sufficient.
9. No 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot (not paid for, by-the-way) for wet garbage.
10. Don't know what to say re vase and that thing with rocks in it.
11. Spotlessly clean.
Reasons why it is in baja:
1. Wrought iron on kitchen window to slow the tweekers down.

Beautiful work; all in all. This from a guy who once churned out a kitchen per day.

Some of the questions answered:

The metal thingy under the wine bottle is to catch drips. There's also a special pour spout on the bottle that prevents drips. Ana doesn't like drips in her house (no comments please.)

The glass vase (multi-colored) was blown by Ana's brother-in-law. The other glass vase (green) is for collecting wine corks (I haven't been told why we collect wine corks.)

The thing with the rocks also has some sea urchin spines and shells in it. Works well to keep napkins from blowing around. Doesn't require dusting (if it did, the rocks, spines and shells would be outside with the rest of our rocks.)

If you look at the 2nd photo you will see there is a yellow handle bottle opener on the counter with the magnet broken off after dropping it on the tile floor. Since that photo was taken, we now have a brand-spanking new opener (I'm not allowed to use the new one because I was the one that dropped the yellow one.)

The kitchen is spotless because I am not allowed in there except to re-fill my coffee cup.

as a builder who is fond of design noir i must say what you have done there is very classy.

while solid surfaces continue in popularity but at premium cost - i more favor large module machined tile which is cheaper to do whether in old mexico or the States, plus you have more options to creativity with trims as you've shown in yours. very classy - thx for showing!:light:

Ya know Steve, I could blow your cover & spill the beans on the fact that you're this huge & tall hulk of a guy while Ana is in reality a sweet & always smiling little itty bitty thing, but I'd hate to disillusion those who haven't yet met you....of the picture you're painting of Ana being this big old warhorse meanie with a frequently used whip & you just an abused & downtrodden poor little urchin battered, bruised & crying in whatever corner you are allowed!

We thought that was going to be a problem. First, we were thinking a double row of the brushed metal tiles up to the surface level of the countertop. Then our tile guy brought in a piece of 1/4 x 1/4 angle aluminum. This covered the raw edge of the counter tiles. Because the aluminum doesn't match the metal tiles exactly, we had the metal tiles set back about 1/8". That little bit of break made a difference in the overall finished look and we're very pleased with it.

Has anyone attempted a pour-in-place concrete countertop? I've acid stained concrete floors before and they came out beautiful. I've only seen pictures of the concrerte countertops- don't know anyone doing them down here though.

Santiago..You have described my kitchen's condition during our fishing trip to a T. Now my burning question is...which cleanser would you use?

edit: p.s. Does anyone know a good way to get burned sugar off a stovetop and maybe a place where I can hide for awhile?
