don pepe's or don diego's

Wondering if these two campgrounds are still operating in Colonia Guerrero, and which of the two is closer to the highway. We have stayed at both: the one further away several years ago and the one near the highway over a decade ago. We're hoping to stay at the one closest to the highway next Sunday, as we begin our 1700 mile trip to our roots up north. That's as far from Loreto as we can get in one day without imploding in the cab of our old diesel truck. Thanks for saving our lives......................

Vicente Guerrero

Don Pepe is the one closer to the highway, but IMHO, Don Diego's is the better place anymore.

The family who owns Don Pepe's seems to be more interested in their Costa Brava Real Estate----but we have not been there for a few years.

We really preferred the restaurant at Don Diegos, but like I say, it has been 4 or 5 years.

Good Luck

Funny, I was flipping through some old, old guidebooks to remind myself of the name of the town, and it was listed in a couple of them as "Colonia Guerrero." It's big enough now to have a "real" name, I guess. Anyway, thanks for the update. I remember thinking that Don Pepe's wasn't much of a campground--no other campers even back then--but we found a nice, shady, grassy spot to camp and our boys were excited to find rabbit and quail on the menu at the restaurant. Don Diego's is a big, gravel parking lot but has a good shower, as I remember. They are very close to each other so I guess either would be fine for a night's sleep. Just wanted to be sure they were still there...........Thanks for your help.

Don Pepe's still has the restaurant but I havent seen anyone staying in the campground (hook-ups) for several years. I saw a church group camping on the grass a couple of years ago but that was unusal.

For a while Don Diego's bathrooms/showers were in bad shape (and icky) so we've used the "closet" in our camper when we've been there the past few times. I think it was Judy who said she stayed there not too long ago and the BR's weren't too bad.

I think, certainly not absolutely positive, the official name is Colonia Vicente Guerrero and on signs, often there is Colonia V. Guerrero.
It has grown a lot of over the last several years---banks, internet cafe, working signal a lot more commercial places---and from the outside, it looks like the old Motel Sanchez has a face lift.

Don Pepe's always had more of a grassy area, but it is closer to the highway. Good thing is that they are close enough together you can check out both of them.

If you like Chinese food, there is a popular decent Chinese Place near the north end of town. It is in a little center---was right by the Comex store, but they moved. Not great Chinese food, but good and the amount they serve is HUGE.

Good Luck
Diane

Don Diegos is top notch. Great food, try the quail or rabbit. The family running it are real nice people and I told them that I would tout their place on this board.

I had one complaint about the bathrooms which were spotless........the water was too hot. so be careful.

We dont need hookups so we actually stayed in the tent camping area where there were some trees. I think it was like $13 a night.

IMHO Don Pepe's is too close to the road.

Thanks everyone. We don't hook up, but we do need a bathroom.... or at least a toilet. We travel in a popup truck camper. It's such a good stop going north--past the traffic jam ups around San Quentin and in the morning at the border at Tecate at a decent hour. Guess I better return to my packing (sigh).
