New mayor gets sworn in in Asuncion

There was a better than average turnout for the swearing in ceremony for our new mayor...but not due to his popularity. Citizens demanded another vote, this time with enough ballots for all those who wished to participate in the democratic process. But as in many parts of the world...the government does not cater to protest and refused to hold new elections. There was talk of taking over the delegacion and not letting the new mayor take office so tensions were high at the ceremony. The "man who woulda, coulda, shoulda been mayor" was firmly planted at the door to the mayors office along with his buddies. There was some pretty low key heckling when the new mayor was sworn in and took the podium for his speech but luckily that was the extent of the protest. The majority of the crowd applauded and "Pelo Chino" will hopefully serve our community well. We wish him luck and look forward to working with him to improve our village...oh yeah, he's married to Juan's cousin too!

As long as it's "all in the family", you can keep him in check. What matters now is that he works for your community. Hope to be down soon and see for myself. (Banjo in tow)

He's not the mayor, Mayoral elections were in February and each municipality of the 5 in the state of Baja California Sur elected a mayor, no more mayors. In BCS, diferent than other states Delegados or town representatives that work under the mayor in a municipality are by election and not appointed as in Baja California's case. Read articulo 27A http://www.e-local.gob.mx/wb2/ELOCAL/ELOC_Ley_Organica_Munic...
So Mayberry doesn't have a mayor, just a delegado and in this case it's Jose Maria Aguilar Rojas who "won" with 386 votes and his closest rival Onofre Perez had 303 votes with the third place going to Antonio Villavicencio with a mere 92 votes. The problem in Asuncion was that there were not enough ballots and the PRD sent theire people out early and won.
The municipality of Mulege has several delegaciones(districts?) and the government seat is in Santa Rosalia. Another delegacion of Mulege that reported similar anomalies (fraud) was Villa Alberto Alvarado Aramburo. The only mayor for Mulege is Jose Manuel Murillo Peralta and he was elected last february for a 3 year term.
We covered all of this back in Feb, and followed the electoral process on the radio show.

Is he related to my panga captain in Bola. Is his name Jose Rojas? I thought it was Rosas.
Baja Mayberry. I like it.

Instead of Mayberry RFD (Rural Free Delivery) they can call it Mayberry PRD (Partido de la Revolución Democrática).

THANKS Ferna for the clarity---it is appreciated. We wondered why we had heard that the delegado was going to be appointed, and now we understand. The person who told us that is from Tijuana.

Interesting that Baja California Sur does it differently than Baja.

I loosely use the term mayor as it's the closest thing to what the delegado is...the guy in Mulege would be the county MP...it's different here but the delegado is basically a mayor type thing...voted in not appointed (sort of). He's the man you go to when there are mayberry type disputes and he signs all the lot sales and basically runs the town...word is he's a fair honest guy so we look forward to the next 3 years of his term.

oh oh..an elite nomad...maybe you'll be OK if you don't bathe for a bit!
Now, I'm very happy with Pelo Chino...he is known as a very fair, intelligent man...but I'm not pleased at the way he got into office. It's too bad the PRD had to resort to this type of manuever as it questions thier ethics and divides the townsfolk.

This could never, ever happen in the USofA!

2000 and 2004 are a blur to me.
