fulano, Bad things happen in border towns. Most of the residents are very fine
people that are doing all they can to be helpful and living within the law.

Yep, you are right. But try telling that to the Korean's and their families------I doubt that they will nod in agreement.
I think we need to be aware of things like this, evaluate them, and proceed with due caution. In that sense, I appreciate the reports by Fulano, et
al.

Fulano,
The board might not be happy to hear of this crime story . They will tell you its such a rare incident and much worse things are happening in
southern CA.
Please only post happy things here.
Maybe if these poor folks are released unharmed by these hoodlums, (godwilling)
They might like that story...Maybe..

OK here's some happy, happy news. The 5 South Koreans were relesed today, unharmed with no ransom paid. According to the news report:
"Según el Ministerio de Exteriores, las autoridades mexicanas ejercieron una fuerte presión policial sobre los captores después de haberlos
identificado."
According to the Foreign Ministry, Mexican authorities exerted strong police pressure after they indentified the captors.
Funny, there is no mention that they arrested anyone. It's kind of like they knew who did it and told them to please let the Koreans go.

It's blatant racism. Koreans are worth less than $8000 a head? No gringo gets out for less than $10,000. It's a slap in the face to all Koreans in
Mexico.

Well Whoosh, it doesn't speak well of your value "on the hoof" that the kidnappers bypassed you.

Russ: According to the BBC article:
"Police found the five Koreans held in a hotel in Reynosa. It seems the people smugglers offered to take them across to the United States but then
kidnapped them for a much bigger ransom," a spokesman for the Tamaulipas state attorney general's office said.
My question: Do "people smugglers" often get requests from Koreans to be smuggled into the U.S.?

You should read about all the Cubans being smuggled into the US through Mexico.

I don't know who all is coming in now but I'd think coming in thru Canada would be just as easy for many. It's weird how we can be hated by so many
countries yet their citizens go through a lot to get to our shores.

requests. They go to the US to be caretakers at PETA shelters.

Russ, I agree that the Canadian/US border is much more porous, but I assume it is harder to get into Canada legally than into Mexico legally, which
makes the decision one of necessity, rather than expediency.
BTW, they are the leaders of our government that so many peoples resent, disagree with, and condemn--not "us."
