Dealing with Photobucket

To help new members, David brought back the photo thread where he gives a very good explanation of how he uploads pictures directly to the forum.

But then the thread gets very long --- so I thought I might break down this process in a new thread. It is for people who want to use Photobucket, which to me is easier.

1. Sometimes I downsize my photos with photoshop, but it is much faster using the Microsoft Power Tool. If you have Windows XP, you can quickly download the Image Resizer here

Image Resizer

2. To resize the picture, right click, open Resize Picture and a box appears with several choices----Small, Medium, Large, Handheld and then there is a button for Advanced.

3. I use the Advanced. It opens up another choice--Custom. Now if you have a regular landscape oriented photo, just put 600 in the first box and when you push OK, the second number is automatically calculated for you. If it is a portrait oriented photo, fill in the second number with 600 and the first one will fill in. You don't need to make it that big, but any bigger does cause problems for viewers. You will now have a copy of your photo on your computer that is resized.

4. One time saving thing I do if I am going to upload several pictures is this. I copy all the pictures I want to upload and put them in a separte folder in windows. Then I resize several at one time---just select them, right click and resize several at one time. Also, in the advanced mode of the resizer, there is a box for resize the original and I use that.
NEVER RESIZE THE ORIGINAL, ONLY USE THIS IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH A COPY.

5. Now on photobucket, you can upload one picture at a time, or if you have made a separate file, you can upload the entire file.

6. To post to Nomad, I have two windows open on my computer---one for Nomad, and one for Photobucket.

7. Under the picture on photobucket, it will say the name of the photo and the other items listed below.

Potter.jpg
Email & IM
Direct Link
HTML Code
IMG Code

8. The easist way to now post to nomad is just click on the IMG Code which automatically copies that code.

9. DO NOT use the image button on Nomad, just paste the IMG Code that you copied right into your text. Just hit CTRL-V and the Code copies.

It will look like this only it will have [IMG] at the beginning and the end.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/jdtrotter/Potter.jpg

Couldn't show exactly how it will look because then it becomes a picture, but you won't see the picture until after you hit the post button.
Example

It really is faster than it sounds, and as you type your post, you can go back and forth to photobucket, copy and then paste.

Just the way I like to do it---certainly not the only way or only storage place.

Hope more and more people can post pictures---love to see them. Oh, this picture is not Baja---it is from Mata Ortiz on the mainland of Mexico

Diane

Forgot---if you delete or move the pictures on photobucket, they will no longer be on the Nomad forum----means you cut the link.

Down Sizing for Mac users: Image Well is free. http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html
Just drag a photo out of iPhoto or any where else and drop it into Image Well and type in the size you want or use the handy slider. That's if you only want to post one photo. Otherwise photo bucket is great. I'm still working on how to add info to the photos. Here's a video by a Nomad on how to work with smugmug, similar to photobucket: http://baja.smugmug.com/gallery/3936188#228575752-A-LB
It's nice to se your photos .... Good post Diane

I thought I'd play a bit. So I've taken a picture of the image well screen to show you what it looks like. I used another free program to take the shot called SnapNDrag ...http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/snapndrag.html you can select any part of your screen and get a jpeg image that you can drop into image well to re size and post. Fun.

That is great, Russ.

I wanted to try and show the Windows resizer window but could figure out how to do it.

Macs are looking better to me all the time.

I can't say enough about the Mac. A few articles I've read say that Windows XP (of course) runs better on a Mac than some PC machines. The base price hasn't changed much over the last few years of upgrades. So if you are a Windows die hard you can play with the Mac System and or both at the same time. Just a FYI :light:

Diane,

Thanks for the help. How do you deal with the pictures that you leave in Photobucket to keep them from being deleted on the thread?..dt

Just leave them on photobucket---I think there is a level for free storage, but I don't know what it is and I know I have LOTS of photos stored there.

Nice Pix

Ok, let me try it this way...

We came upon this unfortunate group of young adults a little south of Catavina. They were pretty uncomfortable but there wasn't much we could do besides give them some water. An ambulance had been called and we passed it on the highway about an hour later. It was probably 3 hours between the time of the accident and when help arrived....dt

Hey, that worked pretty good. I moved the picture to a new folder, opened it in Microsoft Office Picture Manager and resized it. I used one of the pre-set sizes (448x336) uploaded it to Photobucket, clicked on the img code and pasted it in the text in the reply box like you advised. Previously I had used the image button. Next I'll try a custom size.....

Thanks....dt

Looking forward to lots of great photos! What you will like about the cutting and pasting of the img code is that you can add text inbetween and post several photos in one thread.

I hate all the accidents we see! I hope they all survived. The last one we saw, no one survived.

Curious about the last picture. Did you make it bigger using the already downsized picture? It is not a clear.

Making it smaller is good, but it does not work well in reverse.

My apology if I am wrong.

I printed all these instructions

so this weekend I'll read them several times and I should then become proficient at posting photos.
Just like some day I'll become proficient at fishing, like OSPREY has.

U2U if you have any problems---step by step, I think you will find it easier than it sounds---only read the instructions as you are doing it---hands on learning is the best. Believe me, I am very low on the computer learning curve---

Good luck

Yes, you are correct, I resized the smaller one to the larger size. I made the same mistake with the original and it doesn't look very good now.

As for the people in the accident, I'm not sure how they fared, I always look for crosses when I pass the site but there aren't any. Hope they are ok.....dt

No crosses, they probably made it, I hope.

Yes, a good reminder for everyone. OK, I will shout now. IF YOU RESIZE A PICTURE, DO NOT RESIZE THE ORIGiNAL. With windows image resizer, the resizer automatically produces a copy of the original as the resized picture unless you instruct it otherwise.

That is why I make copies of the ones I want to use and put them in a separate folder---the originals stay put and untouched.

Can you on your computer go back and get the original?

Well, my computer has the Go Back where I can change everything back to the way it was at a previous time. Of course, you lose any very recent information. I have had to use this a few times when I have messed up my computer---playing in the wrong areas.

I think, however, there is a way to just retrieve one item, but I am not sure---maybe one of the really computer knowledgable people can help.
