Greta, are you talking "conventional" roll-up USA kinda garage door? I'll have to get the contact info from my builder, but the one we used showed up when they said they would & did a good job.

In my experience, all the conventional roll-up doors are imported from the USA.

Thanks longlegs, Everyone in our little area has metal doors they have had built. The door will face south and I think a regular metal door will be blazing hot. Our garage will be the first part of are project finished, so we want to secure it so we can store our stuff. Since we will be doing much of the finish work ourselves. I guess I was wondering what people's experiences with metal vs roll up doors are. And as always recommendations for those that are reliable.

My first casa I had double metal doors on the garage....two sets, one about 8' on the car side & 13' on the RV side. I had a garage door opener on the car side & left the RV side manual. Both had a long metal "pin" which went down into a metal pipe in the cement floor, which I think makes them more secure against break-in than a convention roll-up door.

Yes, metal doors can make a space into an oven. I counteracted that by installing screened openwork blocks 13-14' off the ground for cross-ventilation & airflow. There are also some spray-on foam insulation products...I'm not certain how/if it'd work on metal, though...I know that Morgaine7 has an entire casa wall insulated with it; she might chime in if she knows if it'd work on metal.

Most ironworker's can make garage doors & metal man-doors in any design that you dream up. They also have contacts to set up an automatic garage door opener if you want that convenience. I did that, but I also put a dedicated switch in the garage that shut power off to the opener & I put the lock pins in place when I left for any length of time.

Go look at some of your neighbors doors, if you feel the quality/workmanship is better on one that the others, ask the owner if they'd recommend the person who did their work. All my references are here in La Paz, and I'm certain there are qualified iron-workers in your immediate area.

Thank you longlegs and bajaguy..... Bajaguy we live in Truckee, not too far from carson city. I work in one of the hospitals in reno. We have taken out 2 skylights in our truckee house because of the solar gain. I will try the foam idea on our garage.

Bajaguy is correct - we have installed 1-1/2" foam on the inside of the sectional metal doors and it really helps.
