Transiting to TJ airport via Amtrak, bus, & taxi??
Okay, so from LA lets say...
LA to San Diego Via Amtrak
San Diego Amtrak Station to San Ysidro Red Bus Station via City Bus or Taxi
San Ysidro to TJ Red Bus Terminal via Red Bus
TJ Red Bus Terminal to TJ Airport via Taxi
TJ Airport to La Paz via Volaris Airlines...
does this work?
Howz the TJ airport and stuff...Is it gnarly like the rest of TJ?
I just priced plane tix from LAX to LAP and its like $550ish after taxes!
$200 jump in 1 year - ouch!
I'm looking to try the TJ thing...
Any experienced TJ airport crew care to offer advice...
Many thanks...

It's easy. Once you get off the train in San Diego go out the front door, cross the street and catch the trolly to the border. Cross the border and
take a cab to the airport. It should be around $12.00. Maybe a little more.
The airport lines for check in are sometimes a little long so get there early and say hello to Edgar the bartender and have a drink.
You won't have any problems.

First - have you checked the recent fares on Volaris TJ-LAP? Forget LAX-LAP, get yourself to San Diego the cheapest way you can and take the Volaris
shuttle $15 from the Santa Fe train depot downtown San Diego to TIJ aiport. I don't know when you're planning to travel, but promotional fares on
Volaris are now $160 RT from TJ-LAP thru the end of October.
TJ airport is OK. If you need to get your tourist visa there, U2U me and I'll tell you how to do it.
I fly out of TJ to LAP every couple of months. Things are changing but I'm glad to be flying Volaris my next trip. Not sorry to see Aerocalifornia
go.

Good to know Dana----I had no idea that the Volaris bus picked up at the train station. That saves a lot of time and walking!
Do you know when the bus picks up at the station in SD?

Lips - here's the link to the shuttle schedule from Amtrak downtown San Diego. However this schedule is probably only good til Oct 1, when they have
a new schedule. Keep an eye on the Volaris website.

Avolar was also gounded today, so the Mexico low-cost flyers are in turmoil right now. Volaris is Carlos Slim's baby and the news out of Mexico
indicates they're going to be one of the last airlines standing, with Aeromexico and Mexicana.
All this is a long way of saying that schedules will probably be in flux too.

I flew Volaris a few weeks ago from TJ to Cabo and really enjoyed the flight. I usually fly Aeromexico but was very impressed with the extra leg room
and the seats seem to be larger as well.
Aeromexico is really outrageous with there fares. I fly so much on Aeromexico I always get upgraded to business class and that is one of the reasons I
fly with them. The company also picks up the tab.
I have around 150,000 miles built up with their "Premier" program and recently gave miles to some friends for a few tickets. The taxes that they had
to pay was about $150.00 per ticket. It's not a deal anymore to use miles. It's cheaper sure but just a few years ago the taxes were only about
$35.00.
I am going to use Volaris as much as I can from now on....

Don't check heavy luggage! I took a flight from TJ to LP a year or so ago, and decided to check a small suitcase full of books because it was heavy.
Was sent to a separate line where all the checked stuff was being weighed--and the fee for mine came to $112 U.S. Almost as uch as the ticket.

Danaeb, many thanks for the info about the Volaris shuttle. I was just checking fares on the Volaris website for LAP-TJ flights and they are running
around $300.00US round trip when you add in all the taxes. What happened to those great promotional fares?
Vivaloha - I've walked across the border from San Ysidro to Tijuana a couple of times and then taken a taxi to the TJ airport - it's easy. The taxis
are all lined up and waiting right as you come through the gate - but the Volaris shuttle sounds like it could be a better and easier way to do it.
