Update on Cabo Taxis

Transportation Dispute Affects Tourists in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express)

U.S. Consulate General Tijuana, Mexico
WARDEN MESSAGE
August 5, 2008

The Consulate General in Tijuana is providing this notice to U.S. citizens in the area to ensure that they are aware of a potential for ground travel disruption and extended travel times in and around San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

The Consulate General has received reports that taxi drivers have tried to prevent tour vans from transporting American tourists to and from resorts in the Cabo San Lucas area. Taxi drivers and tour van drivers are engaged in a longstanding dispute over which group has the right to transport passengers on state, local, and federal roads. In recent incidents, taxi drivers have forced tour vans and busses to stop and disembark their passengers, who must then seek alternate transportation.

The governor of Baja California Sur asked for support from federal authorities, and approximately 250 federal police were deployed to prevent an interruption of travel services at hotels and van services.

U.S. citizens living or traveling in Mexico for more than one day are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Mexico. U.S. citizens without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. Consulate. By registering, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy or consulate to contact them in case of emergency.

The nearest consular section serving San Jose del Cabo is the U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana (Avenida Tapachula 96, Col. Hipodromo; telephone (52) (664) 622-7400 ). In addition, there is a U.S. Consular Agency to provide emergency citizen services in Cabo San Lucas (Blvd. Marina Local C-4, Plaza Nautica, Col. Centro; telephone (52) (624) 143-3566 ).

To contact U.S. Consulate General Tijuana - Call (52) (624) 622-74-00

Last week they emptied two hundred people and made them take their rip-off taxis ....

In Cabo you pay ten dollars american for a two block ride ....

And the drivers won't tell you it is only two blocks :fire:

These guys are thugs .... and one of the taxi cartels is owned by the mayor.

Once again it's that business  model where you rip, rip and rip off again, without a care for future business.

SOS ...... Stuck on Stupid
