Mexican border city fines Americans

who buy more than their share of cheap diesel

By Associated Press
3:06 PM EDT, August 9, 2008

MEXICO CITY (AP) _ A Mexican border city has begun fining U.S. drivers who cross the border to fill extra drums, tanks or barrels with government-subsidized Mexican fuel.

The city of Ciudad Acuna, across the border from Del Rio, Texas, said Friday that it fined four U.S. residents for carrying extra diesel and would impound their cars until they pay. The fines equal 70 percent of the value of the diesel confiscated.

U.S. drivers can fill up their own vehicles, but carrying extra fuel containers back across the border violates customs regulations and possibly safety rules, a report from the city said.

Mexico, one of the world's top 10 oil producers, sells diesel fuel domestically at subsidized prices of about US$2.25 per gallon, about half the U.S. price.

Mexican filling stations near the U.S. border have seen an increase in American drivers who cross over to fill up. Mexican truckers and drivers complain the run on fuel is causing temporary shortages and longer lines for them.

I say that we should use the same rules for the illigals in the US as they do to illigals in Mexico.

If you have a medical crises and can't pay the bill in Mexico, you go to jail.

We should do the same for Mexican nationals in the US.

We are not alowed to work in Mexico without jumping through hoops.

I agree it could be a problem for the supply side but, maybe they should be fining the stations that sell it to them. This is just another rip-off of North Americans. Just when you think Mexico has pulled her head out of her butt, they pull this nonsense.

What a crock. Since when do Mexican municipalities enforce Mexican federal customs regulations? That would be like San Diego enforcing NAFTA.

My interpretation: Some Mexican entrepreneurs are upset because some Americans are cutting into their business of selling Mexican diesel over the border in the US. So, they got the local police chief to kick a few butts.

I found this very

interesting since mexicans have been leeching off us forever in one form or another, yet when we take advantage of a situation such as this we're suddenly ugly American scum suckers.

Heaven help those suckers if Americans ever really start to realize what is going on and put their foot down or UP.

I don't understand the anti-mexican positions on this board of allegedly Baja lovers.

They mostly come to the united states because there are jobs that the people that live there won't do because they don't pay enough, are dirty, hot, nasty, etc, etc.

I have more to say, but never mind as it just isn't worth it. Come visit and hate all you want, but don't come over to the mainland.

Okay, maybe I'm not finished. Why aren't any of you enforcers hammering on the FM3 guy for letting his visa expire. You can pad your posting counts over there as well.

Pacside,

It doesn't burn me up for you to allow your FM3 to expire. My only point that was lost on everyone is that illegal aliens violate the law and the people on this board villify them even though they have no problems enjoying the benefits they provide, cheap labor, hence cheaper goods in the US.

You also violated the law yet no one has the same viceral reaction to that. Of course they will argue that your violation is a minor one, etc.

I am just pointing out the inconsistencies, not making judgements. If you like paying your fines and not following the rules, I don't care. I am just observing two different reactions to violations of law. In fact I though I provided you some useful feedback in asking if you had registered your FM3, which is a requirement.

I am finished with the subject as I don't like to hear myself talk like the active posters on the board. So you all are free to continue listening to yourselves talk and flaming those that don't share the same thoughts that you do.

Me I will continue to live full-time in Mexico enroute to citizenship. Oh look, my Victoria is empty....time for another. And Chivas is leading Monterrey 1 - 0 at half time and the second half begins in 2 minutes.

There is nothing illegal about being late with an FM3. I have been late twice in the last 3 years and paid the fine. To compare that to being an illegal in the US is foolish.
I am glad you are living your dream and are on your way to being a real Mexican. Its just your pretending that mexican soccer is exciting to watch that I am not buying.

It's not vilification, Stan. It's frustration. We, those here my age and more, know we won't be around to see these illegal immigrants assimilate and educate themselves to the point that one of the gifted guests will invent a machine that picks strawberrys and his brother opens a WalMart that has aisle signs in English.
Now, that will be progress.
