Emergency Evacuation Slide Ride

If you are ever on an airplane to Loreto,La Paz or Cabo and hear the pilot say that there is smoke in the c-ckpit and that he is heading back to the airport and the oxygen masks (eventually) come down because the smoke is now in the cabin and then you come into the airport the opposite way and the pilot slams on the brakes and the plane comes to a abrupt stop and the doors open and the evacuation slides deploy and the flght attendent is screaming to go go go this is what it would look like.

While we were returning to the airport we talked about how maybe our next trip we will just take our camper and drive down to the Sea of Cortez for a camp.

Too much fun! We eventually made it on another plane to our destination six hours later, which was not actually Baja but has an ocean!!

http://www.latimes.com/video/?autoStart=true&topVideoCat...

Mateo is number two off the front slide. QueBarbara is seen at :36 seconds walking in front of the plane toward me.

While we were on the tarmac waiting to get on the bus we were treated to the sight of the largest commercial aircraft in the world, Emirates Air Airbus 380, land on the adjacent runway, it was quite a sight. Later we learned that the LA Fire Department and the LAX Crash and rescue trucks were supposed to spray water hoses into the air when the plane touched down as a celebration, which was nixed when we made our unscheduled return. This helped explain why there was no less then a dozen fire trucks and scores of firefighters meeting ur plane.

Viva Baja!

Hey Matt-

That's wild...we caught that last week but didn't think much of it...well at least I didn't. Glad you survived to share the story. This will definitely make for some great camp fire talk. Can't wait to hear more.

Gato, if you took video on the rest of your trip, this footage would make a perfect intro for a classic what-I-did-on-my-summer-vacation home movie! Not the kind of excitement you were after, huh?

WOW...WHAT A WILD RIDE!!

Very glad that you are okay. It might not have seemed fun at the time, but it sure is a fun story to be able to share now and over the years. And, you've got the video to prove it! Hope you had a GREAT time in Hawaii.

HOLY GUACAMOLE!

What a wild ride! And to catch it on tape! It must have been scary to be split up from Barb...to not come out together.

Glad you guys are OK...and that you have another story to tell!

I wondered about that too, why the two of you didn't/couldn't do the wild slide ride together...

Glad it was another happy ending.

Sea of Cortez summer might have been less troublesome. I do have a coconut bra either one of you could borrow for next year. We could pretend you're in aloha-land. We'll call it "bajaloha".

Saludos, and hope to see you soon,

Your pals,
P y D

When we landed at HNL we were first off and walked in to baggage claim to 'meet the press'. Barb's interview made the 10 o'clock news on HNL8. I had a lady from the paper ask me what happened and if any one got hurt and if there were any pile ups on the slide was anybody screaming and........I had no gory details. The next day's paper I got scooped by a three year old who was qouted 'I was crying down slide with daddy'.

Everybody lived, a few scrapes and one pregnant lady asked to go to hospital, heard all was ok with her, some chose not to continue on.

Anytime is a good time for Hawaii, but the weather has been perfect, even the Vog on the Big Island has been blown away by the tradewinds.

Thanks! I will see if I can get it when I return to the mainland, if we make it back! :-)

Once we were on the ground it was kind of fun! When I am in my 80's sitting on the last open beach in Baja around a nice camp fire the story will have me landing the plane because the pilots passed out!:bounce::coolup::saint:

We were in the front row and I told her to go and I would make sure everyone else in our section got off OK, at least the women. When she went up front the only slide open was the left side, the right side opened and I told the girl in front of me to 'go right', after that others came up and followed, barb was at the bottom of the other slide looking up for me, i finally yealled and got her attention just as the firefighters got on scene.

Fun!

Not sure how I would look in the coconut bra and fairly certain we will never have to find out. There is not enough tequila in the world, or maybe there is? :dudette:

Matt- it was the rockets, man....

I have it on good authority that your plane was shot down by several folks returning from Ensenada with some left over rockets that needed to be sent up.
(Sound familiar??)

And hey, whatever day it was, I got an alibi,
and I am stickin' with it, pal...

AA planes are old heaps of junk held together with duck tape.
