Asuncion/Tortugas/Abreojos
Our annual trip next Feb/March may take this loop and I need some help on likely road conditions for some "less than stalwart" vehicles.
Last year our guys went up to Santa Marta for the cave paintings (great trip, by the way)
One of our vans found the trek to be just a bit much, although he did make it with no incident it was a stretch.
My F-150 gobbles up all these roads with no problem, but I am trying to assure my gang that at least Asuncion is an easy trip, and hopefully Tortugas
and Abreojos as well.
Any thoughts? or helpful input?

The road from Vizcaino to the Bahia Asuncion all nicely paved, but could get a little sandy if the wind is blowing by the Laguna salada. The road to
Bahia Asuncion (Shari?) hasn't improved in years...it;s fairly washboardy and very sandy but not lose sand. The view of the Bay will blow your mind!
From the Bahia Asuncion turn-off to Bahia Tortuga is reasonably graded but has many patches of soft sand and the talcum powder dust that Baja is known
for. Just don't slow down when hitting the soft spots. Any vehicle will coast through them. In Feb. Mextrans was feverishly working on paving the road
from Bahia Turtuga. (Also if you search Bahia Tortuga there is a thread with photos of the bay). In Feb. the road from Bahia Turtuga east, was paved
to about 20 miles and it may be close to 30 miles by now, which still leaves about 40 miles of dirt. Part of what makes the dirt road worse is the
constant driving of dump trucks that deliver base and pavement to the Mextrans crew. The dirt road is good for about 40-50mph and is double wide. By
the way, on your way out of Tortuga, make a detour when you see the Playa Malarrimo sign and drive to the beach and fish camps. Easy fast dirt road.
Well worth the side trip. At the east fish camp, the last shack on the right, say hi to Eugenio for me. He has an old back Toyota pick up.

The road to Asuncion is supposed to be completed by then so that shouldn't be a problem. The road to Abreojos and Tortugas is washboard but well
traveled. As long as you go slow and/or carefully, it shouldn't be a problem.

what is the fishing like in the spring?
I assume pangas are available.

Pangas are almost always available in all 3 towns although it can be tougher to find a guide during lobster, abalone or caracole seasons.
YT fishing slows down in the spring but there's plenty to catch; should still be some flatties and reef fish around.
And grouper never leave home !
I wouldn't bet on the road being finished but check with Shari before your trip to confirm. She can also give you up-to-date conditions on the coast
road to Abre; last year it was impassable for a short while after a storm.

Road conditions vary alot here depending on recent rain washouts and grading...so check in just before you come is best. I am happy to report finally
driving on the new pavement on the road from Vizcaino to Asuncion...yipppeee....actually done before the due date and boy is it nice but beware...just
as the new part starts and you tend to put the pedal to the metal...there is an unseen big dip that one could bottom out on by surprise. But lots of
us drive little low cars and make it fine to all these coastal villages unless there is a big washout.
Sometimes there is even yellowtail into february too...and always nice calicos. There are licensed panga operators in all villages. If you come in
february, we will take you to a fish camp for all you can eat lobster!

With the new part of the paved road to Asuncion open there is only about 11 miles of dirt left and they say, it will be done by the end of the
year---keep checking.
But the last part is unsually not bad--couple of soft spots, but regular cars drive it all the time.
Last time we took the road to Tortuga, the part not paved was not bad---as usual, some washboard, but it changes all the time. They are also working
on paving all of it. Now the shortcut from San Jose del Castro to Asuncion can get quite bad in places, but again, the locals drive it in their
cars.
Road from Asuncion to Abreojos can range from very good to very washboardy. Where possible, if the salt flats are dry, everyone uses them----nice and
smooth, but don't go too fast, some surprising holes.
Don't know how far the road from Highway 1 to Abreojos is paved now---still working on it.
