la paz round up

Over the last few weeks, police(?) have arrived in the night with heavy guns and rounded up the rowdy street druggies who hang out on the street near the Naval Station on Rangel, Calejon Rangel, Topete and Calejon Topete.

This news comes with mixed feelings. Who wants armed AFI to arrive with guns? I do! The druggies are lost souls but are they guilty of crimes? They are pretty bad guys at night, they steal gas, rob houses steal batteries and everything they can from outdoor lights to exposed cable. So its very quiet now. We hope that they will receive support and rehabilitation.

La Paz in the region of Grande Baja, Posada, the old Engelbert Humperdink place, the old RV waterfront camp, Rangel/Insurgentes/Sinaloa/Nayarit and Magote on the water front, is going through a change (like over the last 30 years yawn) with many new homes and condos, but it seems with so many developments and stores coming to life after so long perhaps the city wants to run crime net round ups. Sort of.

For those us who leer out our windows in fear of the chaos at night, we welcome the enforcement and we are watching their actions to be sure the police act approopriately. We feel that the actions are legit, well intended and we hear the guys and gals are being treated well with visitors, resources and opportunity for rehabilitation and even work.

I know that there will be the gringo ol timers, people from texas, who deny that druggies exist or that AFI exists or that this has even happened and others who will decry its intent but I truly believe that the paceno/gringo community rallied, they signed petitions, they wrote letters, they spoke out and they lobbied on behalf of the community pitting agencies against each other to rid the area of control by corruption and the city responded for various reasons including the arrival of many government families who wish to live here in peace. I hope that some of you see it as a successful community effort that took years to see a response.

Every effort helps, it just takes a while.
