No More Bike Race

This is the message from the organizers of the Bike Race.

The Rosarito Ensenada 50 Mile Fun Bicycle Ride has enjoyed a history spanning almost 30 years and has been an icon among cycling events around the world. But the decrease in Baja tourism has reduced attendance to about 5,000 riders: our financial break-even point.

We have decided that this next ride on September 27, 2008, will be our last and we would like to invite you to take this final opportunity to enjoy Baja California on this historic ride!

Did you know they had a two-tier pricing policy? $40 to ride for Americans, and $30 to ride for Mexicans.

I'm going to march into On the Border restaurant in San Diego, order in Spanish and ask for the Mexican economic adjustment discount.

How does one come up with the idea that it's lack of participation? Their announcement doesn't say anything about that. This has always been a huge bike ride and a boost for the tourism industry in both Rosarito and Ensenada for those 2 weekends every year. But maybe after THIRTY YEARS, there just isn't anyone willing to take it over....I know that's the case with anything we've touched. We take it, make it better, then no one else wants to take over....

Oh, the site is www.rosaritoensenada.com

Too much fun

In the 80's I rode in the race with a group of friends 6 times in seven years. One year we had five guys and we rode as a team and finished in 2:10. Best finish I ever had solo was 2:39. We had a good friend "lucky Louie" who did the race on a three speed beach cruiser with a big rack on the back with ice chest and a case of Corona's he finished in about 5 hours and had one beer left for at the end.

The last year that they had only one race, instead of two, (1988-89?) there were 15,000 entries. A few of us actually road in from the south to the starting line at the Arch in front of the Rosarito Hotel and when the gun went off we were right at the front. Other friends who had come down for the race were at the back of the pack and when the 10:00 AM start went off it was so crowded that they ended walking their bikes for 30+ minutes until they finally were able to get on the bikes and ride. The next year they added a second race.

The ride down the hill from El Tigre area toward the coast was the fastest I ever travelled on a bike, front wheel wobble and folks on the side of the road wanting to slap five or tap your helmet got your attention.

The last year I rode I never made it past Medio Camino as I swerved to miss a rider who fell in front of me and left the roadway and folded my front tire in two. The margarita's helped ease the pain.

Too much fun!

We have been the Mexican insurance sponsor for the bike ride for the last five years and have enjoyed being a part of it. I have done the ride six times myself and it is always a lot of fun. It's a great event and we are hoping that someone steps in to take it over and keep it going.

Unfortunately, this is going to hurt the most for the hotels and restaurants in Rosarito and Ensenada. The event was said to bring somewhere around 10 million dollars in revenue to the region annually.

My daughter and I did this ride together a few years ago. I was on a mountain bike and finished in 2 hours 30 minutes. My daughter was on a road bike and beat me. Worth every bit of $40. So much fun, so many memrories!
