Creel, Chihuahua: Gunmen kill 13, including child,

at gathering in Mexico border state of Chihuahua

By Associated Press
4:55 PM EDT, August 17, 2008

MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Mexican authorities say gunmen killed 13 people at a family party in the border state of Chihuahua.

A 1-year-old child is among the dead in Saturday's attack in the mountain town of Creel. State prosecutors said in a statement Sunday that most of the victims were members of a single family.

Witnesses told police that gunmen in three pickup trucks, wearing ski masks and dressed in black, fired on a crowd outside a dance hall.

Authorities did not give a motive for the attack but more than 800 people have been killed this year in Chihuahua, most of the deaths attributed to battling drug cartels.

Creel police officer Rosendo Chavez said the picturesque tourist town had previously been spared from the violence raging through the state.

I did see that and was trying to make a funny.I have friends that live in National City and I stop whenever I drive through.
I would think all news from Mexico that would be of interest to people involved in Baja should be posted. Given what has happened since last fall with crime, all related stories are important.

I was under the impression that this is a Baja forum.
This report is not Baja and should be posted in Off-topic !
And no, I'm not sticking my head in the sand; it's just not "Baja" news.

Mainland cartel-related killings ARE Baja-related - they just happened (in this case) to be across the Gulf - I am intensely interested in the rising tides around our little piece of paradise.

No man is a peninsula (or something like that, English 101 was some years back).

I appreciate hearing items such as this. Though my real love is in Baja and I spend time there every year. We also go to the mainland, and have a very dear friend in Puebla, and another friend in Merida, that we will be visiting in January. Not all Nomads JUST visit Baja!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure there are others.

As a 21 year Bajanian who has enjoyed visiting Creel on a couple of occasions I am intensely interested and saddened that the sickness of the drug world has violated the peace of that charming town.

Baja connection??

Interesting,
Just yesterday I googled the Copper Canyon info because we are thinking next year to drive down "The" Baja, catch the ferry, take the train across the Copper Canyon to Chihuahua, etc.
YIKES!!!
When they shoot up the real tourist areas it is great cause for concern....
