Los Cabos taxi wars heat up

The image of Baja California’s top international tourist destination is getting a bit tarnished.

A state law that favors taxis over other transportation has visitors to Los Cabos up in arms and federal policemen guarding hotels to keep the peace between militant taxi drivers and van and limousine transportation operators, who only have federal, not state permits.

After 200 federal police were sent to the resort area to control the confrontation, the U.S. consul in Tijuana put out a tourist warning for Los Cabos on August 5.

Some taxi drivers have blocked limos and forced passengers to either get out and enter their taxis or walk.

Hotel operators say the taxis are usually older cars imported from the U.S. and that the quality of transportation has affected their business. While the 551 taxis (owned by just 11 concession groups) pulled in some 7.5 million dollars last month, local hotel operators figure they lost about 145 million dollars due to the taxi blockade and the negative publicity it has created.

The high cost of taxi fares is making rental options look enticing for some visitors.
