Giant wave drowns American tourist in Mexico

Associated Press - September 3, 2008 6:24 PM ET

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) - Police say an American tourist drowned after a giant wave swept him and two others away in southern Baja California.

The U.S. Embassy confirmed that Richard Harry Barr, 72, from Fort Smith, Arkansas, drowned in Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday.

State police investigator Enrique Wilar says the two other people managed to swim to shore.

Wilar said the three were taking a walk on a beach when they were swept away.

The surf was unusually rough from the effects of Tropical Depression Karina.

On the same stretch of beach two years ago, a giant wave swept away and killed an American tourist.

Yeah must have been Sol Mar or lovers Beach. I bodyboarded there for a photoshoot in 1998 when I was 16 with a hurricane off the coast and it was massive. Big truck size barrels and heavy beatings but lots of fun. Very dangerous for inexperienced and even expert swimmers. Wouldnt try it again and now its illegal anyway. It always amazes me how close people get to the water line not knowing how much water is moving around so fast.

When I was young and stupid(1991) I would wade into the water and get hammered by the five white wash pushing up the beach. It is surviable if you remain calm and don't fight the tow or rip current. Let the water pull you out past the breakers which is about 25 yards off shore and then body surf in.
