The End of Ensenada Blanca

I just recieved the news from a friend who passed by and had a look from the mountains above: the earthmoving equipment that was parked at the entrance of the beach is in use to build the foundation of the 5 story hotel in Ensenada Blanca.:no: They apparently are bulldozing on the beach and in the bushes in between the 2 arroyos.

I have been told, that both the hotel and the retreat center have been sold to the developers.

So, for everybody who has been camping here since years....this is the end for us at this special beach!!!:fire:

Never stayed at the hotel but met the owners and got a tour.
Did stay at the retreat with Denise and Bill.
Did camp there as well

:no::no::no::no::no::no::no:

No Ron it is in BCS near Ligui.

it is true. Villas Group is the developer. bulldozing the beach and the plants! do you have any idea what the former hotel owners had to go through to construct their modest, environmentally friendly structures complete with composting toilets? what a joke the marine park is, and totally against their rules :fire:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

oh and I ought to photograph what Loreto Bay is doing with those canals! ugly as hell and will citigroup be able to finish it or will it be another unfinished eyesore in the Baja? kinda logical question given this weeks developments in the financial markets. :barf:

Pam,
You're just jealous that you don't get to live on a canal with your own canoe.:biggrin:

The good old days...

We used to camp on the shore of the bay at Puerto Escondido along with others back in the 70's... Then they closed it off to everyone and turned it into the ugly mess that never got finished.. progress?

Here is a photo I took of Ensenada Blanca in Dec. 2001, from the beach there.

Did they move out all the local families?

CaboRon, it is at the bottom of the big grade of Hwy. 1, south of Loreto, where the highway leaves the coast to go to Insurgentes and Constitucion... Exit at Ligui and take a right in a few hundred meters east of the highway. Baja's third oldest mission was near that right turn.

Bielefeld, For us water people, kayackers/sailors and beach lovers, this is nothing short of an environmentel tradgety. Geographicaly the way the bay in Ensenada Blanca is oriented, it affords us maximum protection from the severe winter Northerlies that roar down the Sea of Cortes mostly in the winter time months. And a good huricane hole in the summer time. But saddest of all is the destruction of the fishing village there. It was one of the oldest in Baja. Because of a steady and reliable water source behind the village in the surrounding mountains, it supported a nice refuge for generations of small familys, and an authtentic lifestyle for people who were self sufficient. Do you know how close they are buldozing to the north towards Ligui? You are absolutlely correct Pam. The Marine Park is nothing short of a big joke!!!!! So Sorry. ++C++

actualy most of EB faces dead on Norte and is fully exposed to north winds. I haven't been there in about one year so not sure about the village. I do know one thing, that the developers were very intent on getting rid of it when acquiring the land and putting my friends (the former hotel owners) through hell.

Pam.. You are correct about the exposure, however you can get close enough at the N.W. end of the bay and behind the bluff to get out of severe weather. I have had to do it more than once. ++C++

Pam, that is sad news indeed. Sorry.... Here are a few photos from Ensenada Blanca this past April. It was a fantastic place to camp. The Sea of Cortez and Baja will lose a gem.

From what I heard, the fishing village is not affected from the development, yet. They are building in the middle of the the bay, in the bushes behind the beach.

The village is at the west end of the bay. The new road, that is supposed to be build, should lead right though the village. I wonder how the hotel guest would take that. So I fear for the houses of the fishermen as well.

I was told by one of the guards, that he is afraid of violance from the many weekend visitors from Ciudad Constitution. They see this beach as their weekend- getaway. And in the last years, an average of about 6- 10 familys were camping eyery weekend.

And on Semana Santa, the Easter week, about 5.000 people visit the bay!!! The beach is solid with cars then. The Villas Group tried to block them 2 years ago. They nearly had riots then. In the end the police kept the beach open for the people. Let's see how Semana Santa is with a five star hotel behind the beach. The 5000 people could all use the bathrooms from the hotel. Hey, maybe the hotel is an improvement.....:lol:

Pam,
If the reports about the dollar amount they received for the property and the "motel 6" with a view is anywhere near true, lots of volunteers for this hell.

Very nice pictures Stimbo, Thank You. Those N.F. VW-25 tents will certainly stand up to just any amount of wind The Sea of Cortez will dish out. Great choice.....So.... does anyone have any idea where all the sewage from a 5 story hotel will end up when it is up and running? Has anyone heard of any plans for a treatment plant, or will it all get pumped back into the bay? ++C++

Here is the link to the Villa Group press release about the construction. Looks like the timeshare part will be done first before the hotel. Can't wait to have the timeshare land sharks at the Loreto airport and on every street corner in town.:fire:

They are also building a hotel in the town of Loreto - hotel Santa Fe.

http://www.villagroupresorts.com/press-room/loreto

The last time we were in Loreto we made a special trip to Ensenada Blanca to have one last look at it before it was ruined. Apparently Villa Group plans to use Danzante Resort as a training center for the employees they hire for the new development. I read that they are offering jobs and training to the Ligui residents. I wonder if they will offer them "relocation" as the road to the resort goes right through the village.

Maybe they will do what Todos Santos does....

Dig a big pond on the dunes and just pump the sewage into it :lol::lol:

Oh yea, open and exposed too ....

Sure smells nice
