located a ton of their stuff on amazon

plenty of used CDs cheap or BIN mp3s to load.

so - what titles, CDs , do ya'll like best? (i never buy singles on line)
on the latin side i prefer jazzier beats and lots of instrumentals - the more statistically dense the better, not really dependent on vocals but i love Flora Purim.
i am not a pop fan at all! and if any of this has a rap intoned flavor......fuggetaboutit.

Friend Nena - what say you girl??:?:

This is maybe not relevant, but sometimes I enjoy the "hoompah kind of music" that must be from the "Kaiser" period. Got some names from a CD vendor here in Loreto, but not quite what I want.
El Chapo,
K.Paz de la Sierra,
Montez de Durango.
Maybe "Corrido" music ??
Any input??

Lila Downs performs with the band. Just look for any of her CD's. Check out the youtube stuff and you can see the same guy accompanying her on lots of songs using different instruments.

Capitan Mike...

I don't say this about many groups, but all the Ozomatli cd's are good ones - and can be quite different, depending on band members and guests. Lots of different instruments and sounds from a variety of cultures. A number of outstanding musicians and singers have appeared in live performance with them from time to time - like Lila Downs, a marvel unto herself.

Favorite tune? I guess overall I'd have to say the sweet and quiet little offering, Cuando Canto. (I believe it's performed in one of the links on this thread.) I tend to break into song soon after I wake up... and more often than not, the first tune - oft repeated - is Cuando Canto.

The lyrics are quite simple but I find them inspiring:

Cuando Canto by Ozomatli

When I sing my song I want to inspire my people with a solution
When I wake up in the morning I know that I have the power for any triumph
When I go to bed at night I can see the stars that give me hope
When I dream in the early morning I hope that my work is not temporary
When I show my heart through my actions you can understand that I am not a perfect man, but I try to make the best decisions for the world and I put it in a song
When I sing my song

Nena

Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.

Try this one, Ed. There are others, but I can only paste one link at a time due to my technical limitations. My computer probably knows how to do more, but I don't:no:

Lila Downs' Cumbia-stylings sound a little like Sonora Dinamita. If you like Downs' music, you'll LOVE Sonora Dinamita.

Sonora Dinamita - Mi Cucu

Sonora Dinamita - Mil Horas (Cumbia)

Also, if you are una nueva de musica Mexicana, I would suggest two groups/artists: 1. Los Super Seven (La primero CD es mejor, por que tiene musicians de Los Lobos, Texas Tornados, etc. And, it has traditional Mexican folk songs. :cool:Super group, and, a super album). 2. Lila Downs has become brilliant. Saw her first at the free Adams Avenue music thing, in San Diego, about 5 years ago, and she was AWESOME. Her papi is a gringo, and her mama is a Mixtec. I particularly like her songs sung in Indian dialect. Plus, she is very pretty. :dudette:

p.s. Vincente Fernandez is my favorite.

p.p.s. Calexico has a very different take on the genre.

p.p.p.s Nortec Collective (Ken, we have to get together for a music night, I have their book/dvd, " Paso Del Nortec/This is Tijuana.")

p.p.p.p.s. Banda sucks: I need creative, and, pure, music. Punk Rock/Blues/Western Swing/Norteno/Corridos/Mariachi/Cumbia.

Nada mas.

Paseo del Nortec??? Hmm. Very interesting!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a couple "Must-views!" Okay??

Junior Jein - he probably influenced Ozomatil (or vice versa), and if he started touring the US, they'd feel his heat.

Junior Jein - Lo Que No Sirve Se Bota

People that appreciate Ramon Ayala's Accordion work will appreciate Vallenato, and the numerous Accordion solos each song contains. Here's a great example:
Ernesto y Franco Arguelles - El Dueño Del Estanco

Here's another great artist: Kafu Banton & Almirante

If you enjoy Bob Marley, this Panamanian duo rock the mic real well.

Kafu Banton & Almirante - Ella

Here's a great example of the intricate Accordion work found in most Vallenato hits:

Michael Torres y Juan J. Granados - La Muchachita
