"The Spot" Satellite Messaging System

Does anyone have any experience with "The Spot" Satellite messaging device? The unit will allow you to send an e-mail or a message to friends or family that you are okay and your location. It will also do a 911 and provide evacuation if your injured pretty much anywhere in the world, land or sea. REI sels the unit for $150.00 and there's a $100.00/yr membership fee and there are upgrades available. The most attractive being a $8.00/yr fee for up to $100,000.00 in evacuation insurance. This sounds too good to be true, that's why I'm asking if anyone has used this service.:?:

Bent:

I have a friend that has one....swears by it. I am on his notification list and get "SPOT" reports, or can track his trip with waypoints. Send me a u2u and I will put you in contact with him.

bent, i have one. i just got back from a motorcycle trip ,b.c.s.,sonora, and chihuahua. the folks back home were interested in our whereabouts in some of the more romote portions of chihuahua (being harvest time... what with all the shooting and all) it works well and is a real comfort to those who would like to know just where in the hell you are! each email sent has a link to google earth showing the location of the sent message. we all carry them in aircraft in alaska too.

Pacificobob,
Wasilla, huh? Isn't that Sarah's hometown? Maybe she could benefit from a "PoliticoSpot" model....helps a person with their political whereabouts when they appear totally lost once they leave home...:lol::lol:
