what kinda bird is this????

we were surprised to see this guy standing at the base of the cliff (15' high) and in the high tide zone, but this was at low tide. he didn't budge when we came into his view, although the buzzards and pelicans all took off.

ideas?

A Great Blue Heron for sure in the second photo. You've got two different birds pictured, but both are in the heron family. The Great Blue Heron is amazing to watch fly.... graceful but like a dinosaur.

Not the easiest call, but I concur with BajaHawk, it is a Yellow crowned night heron.

Woody, nice picture capturing the bird and the light foot crab.
