Ak-47 gunfire and a dead body by my house in Rosarito... not good

The police are still here- everywhere.

At about 8am I heard the rapid AK-47 gunfire. I didn't see the victim or the shooter. It was about 20 rapid shots- very loud- echoing off the buildings. A group of surfers were changing into wetsuits in front of my house and that 's the first clue I had that this was very very close. They dove over the seawall and ran for cover- they left their stuff, car doors open and everything. They just ran. They saw the body laying in the street in front of my neighbors door- I couldn't see it as it was around the side entrance. My neighbor is scared to death. He opened his door to see the body laying at his doorstep before any police were on the scene. He ran to our house in case the gunmen came back. No one even went near the house or body- including us. First aid is out of the question I guess- no point being next if they come back to finish him off.

If this country is going to survive- it better do something soon.

This is downtown Rosarito Beach- Paseo del Mar. About halfway between the power plant and downtown Rosarito.

The body is still there. He must have been on foot.

It was amazing how quiet it was after the shooting. Not a scream, not a dog bark- nothing for about 10 minutes when the police convoy came. We just watched from our veranda and balcony. It was surreal.

Life on the front lines. How nice. Ernie Pyle could have forged a career in Rosarito.

From KPBS - San Diego

"The Arellano Felix Cartel’s geography in Tijuana has shifted. Looking at the quantity of killings in the city’s east and to the south in Rosarito, you see where the cartel’s strongholds are.

Historically, some of the most violent episodes of the drug war were concentrated in Tijuana’s upper-middle and upper class neighborhoods in the city’s center. However, with this most recent wave of violence we see that Tijuana’s east and Rosarito are the hot zones.

The number of deaths in middle and working class areas of Tijuana illustrate the city’s drug consumption problem. Part of “El Teo’s” strategy to take over drug trafficking in Tijuana, has been to kill neighborhood drug dealers who work for the Arellano Felix Cartel. By plotting these deaths, the map shows how pervasive drug dealing has become in these areas and, therefore, how prevalent consumption is.

The map helps track the unprecedented brutality of this battle in the drug war. By keeping count of people who’ve been decapitated; dissolved in acid; minors caught up in the violence and police killed we see that cartels have reached a new level of gruesomeness and disregard for life.

Tourists apparently are not targets in this drug war. Looking at the map, tourist areas are not hot spots.

A look at victims’ ages shows an important percentage are thirty and under. Dozens of the dead were still in their teens. Also, many people police have detained in this recent wave of violence, and who police accuse of being important players in the drug trade, are also young."

Well- The police JUST came to the door.

They had a closeup of the face of the victim to show me on their digital camera. We recognized him as a young man who used to run every morning on the beach. We didn't know his name.

If citizens/witnesses don't aggressively cooperate, both with the Police and with each other, then the Police are almost helpless---------citizen cooperation is the paramount tool the Police have. As long as the citizenry don't take a stand and help the Police and each other, then the situation will just get worse and worse, in my opinion.

What a trajedy!!!!

I've often fantasized about shooting one of them health nuts. Guess someone beat me to it.

And more good news:

The surfers probably won't be back.

Whoosh I am sorry this happened.

When I am aware of crime, I know that we can easily find the culprits due to the geography in Baja. There is no place to go and hide. Its not at all hard to follow tracks, to find a vehicle in order to find the perpetrators though in this case as in so many others no one wants to find the culprits, no one is going to look and no one is going to pursue it.

They are not after you.

So...

I encourage you to take the opportunity to go visit some friends away elsewhere for a vacation. Perhaps when you return things will have changed... either way its time for break from the action, no?

I agree, Barry. Unfortunatly, we can't understand the distrust Mexican citizens have for the police. To most of them, it's incomprehensible to confide in the law. They never know who they're talking to.
I admire your mindset on this issue although I think it was formed in a different place with your law enforcement background.
Thanks.

The tragedy is that only 4% of the police are clean enough to trust. How do I kow if I'm giving helpful info to the "bad guys" and not he "good guys". Truth is, no one knows who is clean enough to trust- so no one talks. I know two people by name that were closer to this shooting than I was and both said to the police they saw nothing.
