Pozole

This is not quite a restaurant review, as no cafe is involved, rather it has to do with the gift of pozole, a traditional New Years dish.

Lots of celebrations happening in town today...musicians everywhere...house guests sitting on verandas..a festive day for Mulege's locals. I was invited to 3 house parties with a music group at each, but I lack that kind of staying power and could only make one small toast at each and then made my goodbyes. (Last night at the Jungla and then at Ana's was quite enough.) The party at mi amigo's, Manuel's, casa was quite 'boistrous' with a great band. His esposa, Carmen, was a perfect hostess. Manuel was having a great time with old amigos and more than a few Tecates. A sure bet that he'll show up for work manana, but he'll be as slow as me, poor fellow. We'll find some shade early, while Carmen makes us coffee with a hint of Kahlua.

On the way home, I stopped at another Manuel's... at his La Sirena grocery tienda in downtown Mulege to pick up some small items. When she saw me, Manuel's wife went into the house and brought me a container of her homemade pozole.. 'for you to take home.' What a treat that was!

She makes the Pozole Rojo (Red Pozole) Simply delicious with lots of pork, chicken, beef (with the bones!), garlic, arbol chiles, fresh nixtamal hominy, a bay leaf, rich red broth chopped shallots, and I don't know what all...but I ate it con musto gusto. Bravo! An ideal custom and a helluva good cure for New Years Day hangovers. It had that perfect spiced flavor..mmmmgood.

I hope all of you had a chance to have some of this truly great soup. Not that anyone here had hangovers this morning of course.

Unfortunately I dropped my camera on the sidewalk in front of Claudia and Miguel's la Tienda yesterday...and it has developed a slight headache, so no photo of the pozole available. Here's one from Google in case you have never had the good experience yourself.

Yum. My favorite dish. Only problem is that too many folks use the canned hominy that is loaded with salt. Pozole rocks!
