Do you remember......CLIFF CROSS Baja book?
This was a 170+ page book called BAJA California Mexico by Cliff Cross. Cost $4.95 when I bought mine. Copyright 1974. Black cover with yellow
highlights. This book would sit beside me while driving for reference. GREAT MAPS ...hand drawn...lots of photos. And the stories.....I have read them
so often just while sitting around camping and thinking of the next place to go. Probably bought it at DICK CEPEK in Downey(?). Did you have one....or
STILL have one ? I do.

Yes, I have a copy says 1970 copyright and 1973 update. I first motorcycled Baja in 1974 so it is fun to look at the old photos to be reminded how
these places looked when I first saw them. I thought it was the best guide book at that time.

I too have one. Great photos, and lots of info not available in other guide books.
My copy looks like it went thru a sand storm (probably did, too), but it somehow remains intact.
I have Cross's Mainland Mexico Guide also.

Yes indeed. I have copies of the 1970 ed. and the 1972 ed. The '72 has some scribbled notes (re: some petroglyphs) from CC in the back.
They still make great reading.
I also have CC's Alaska and the Central America guides. Equally as interesting, and we have yet to use the Cent. Amer. one. It's probably still
current.

If you guys want, I can scan all of his bird's eye view maps, and using photobucket show them here much clearer than these old scans...
The 1972 edition was the best... It had good update notes on new roads for the guide. The 1974 edition that included the new highway was not so
good... the original maps were messed with, adding the new highway, but often not correctly.
I have three editions... 1970, 1972, 1974 and the one produced by HP Books.

El Rosario/ San Felipe SOUTH about 1969...
looked like the way Cliff drew it for his 1970 Baja Guide.
Here are 13 selections from his book... The one of Cabo San Lucas should really scare some... Yes, it was that tiny with no harbor, once upon a time!
The main road went through El Arco, but Cliff surveyed the Guerrero Negro area pretty well... The new graded road between Puerto Escondido and Santa
Roaslia was just finished, but the section over the sierra to Villa Insurgentes was still being built. The main road south was still through Comondu
or La Purisima... or the road from Loreto to Santo Domingo via San Javier could be used.
In the next edition, he made a correction about the Calamajue mission site location (it is across the arroyo from the mill, not next to the mill as
shown).
These maps from 40 years ago are for education...
There are many more... and several of the small villages in Baja Sur....

I've got one copy ('73) originally bought new and worn to near-destruction that I keep in a Zip-Lock. A couple of years ago, I bought two copies ('72
and '73) in near-perfect condition on the Internet. I believe one was $9.95 and one $14.95. Anyone interested should do a search. They may still be
out there.
