or exchange b4 u cross the border! forget the TCs - NO ONE does those and you won't even get close to the real exchange rate if you do it.

I carry them though I never intend to redeem them. I carry about 2 hundred dollars worth in plain view in my wallet along with a token amount of pesos. Everything else is hidden. Let's see you try to pay a mordida with travelers checks.

I have cashed some in various Baja banks when I burned through more money than intended. The traveler's checks served as reserve fund, and I cashed them when I needed to with no problems at all in GN, SQ, and some other places I can't recall. There was not enough of a charge for me to notice. I believe it was about the same as exchanging cash dollars. I always cash the balance when I'm in my own bank at home. It might be a slight inconvenience, but it pays off in spades for peace of mind. I wish my bank would print the purchaser's picture on the checks for security and ease of redemption. They have my photo on file, so it would be easy for them to include this feature. As a whole, I have never said, "Oh damn, I wish I didn't buy those traveler's checks." I would be weary of taking advice from people pooh poohing the idea of traveler's checks unless they have recently used them themselves. It's smart to be prepared for the unforeseen. That is unless you can't budget for a reserve fund because you plan on spending the last dollar to your name.

Packoderm, Funny you should mention mordida
and Travellers Checks,
yrs. back, after mo.s in Mex, coming back
stopped in Rosarito, mistake, pulled over,
I'm sitting on the desk in the Rosarito Beach
Police Station, don't know what
officially constitutes mordida, but it was requested
$180 dollars in a fine, thankfully I had $200 in TC's,
which I showed the Officer, as expected, he did not,
could not deal with a TC.
Settled on $14 in pesos, he wrote me out a reciept
