April 1, in Loreto - Pilot Whales, a Blue, and Dorado too

Not only are yellowtail on the bite north of town at San Bruno Reef, but whales are plentiful, and schools of small dorado are showing up offshore near the canyon. This morning I ran across a school of pilot whales while in search of marlin east of Isla Carmen:

And, an ambitious peanut dorado hit a large feather intended for something with a bill on it. This was the only dorado today, but one day last week 8 were released at the Soledad:

And, about noon as I was approaching the marina, about six miles out I met a blue whale going the other way. Isla Coronado is in the background:

Now This is Baja!... refreshing....and what I wanted to see and hear, Bill.

Great photos of the beautiful sights we see out on the Cortez..those blue whale photos are magnificent!

The dorado are coming closer. Send a few up north, por favor. We have some yellowtail waiting to meet them.

This might be too early for us Mulege fishermen. Although in 1988 we caught small hens and nice 25lb yellowfin tuna near Pta. Teresa. The date was March 15th. Prophetic to catch them on the Ides of March. And... we had a 'Cesar' as a boatmate.

Good day out there! Congratulations. What fun.

Good Baja times are coming.

Thank you Bill,

Your photos are exquisita!

I love those gentle pilot whales. Many moons ago (1986) we were heading out to Coronado Island in our little cabin cruiser by moonlight. A pod of pilots came up and rode out to the island with us. We listened to them spouting all night.

Those are the lucky experiences that Baja memories are made of! :dudette:
