Abandon VW Bus on the dirt road to Punta Abreojos

For those of you who traveled down the washboard dirt road to Punta Abreojos would appreciate seeing these images of the abandon VW Bus that was a nice landmark of letting us know that we only had 25 more miles of this shaking, rumbling, dusty dirt road ride.

These photos were taken October 10th 2005.

This was the last time I drove down the unpaved dirt road to Punta Abreojos. Many times I cursed that dirt road. If you were towing a trailer, It would shake, rumble and almost make you tumble on some of the curvy down hill rocky washboard dips. We lost endless licenses plates from just the mere vibration shaking of the the dirt road.

I have to say I'm glad I was able to have experience driving on that dirt road. My family and I have so many stories of the gnarly dirt road adventure we faced every time we drove on that dirt road.

We bought a brand new 19' Wilderness Lite Weight Trailer to use for our vacations down there. OMG! On our first trip down there in our new trailer we lost gadgets off our trailer and of course our license plate. We towed that trailer from San Diego to Punta Abreojos a total of three times. The road literally cracked our trailer the third time we pulled it down there. We patched up the crack when we got back home to San Diego and luckily found a buyer to buy the trailer from us. LOL

I miss the VW Bus landmark but I'm glad I have photos to remind us how it use to be.

I remember a photo of that bus being used in an advertisement in the four wheel drive magazines about 20 years ago. Even though I hadn't yet been to Baja at that time, the picture captured my imagination. They should make a special exemption for the VWs when it comes to clearing them out for scrap.

Alas, the new road made it easy for someone to come take it for scrap.
