Cartel Henchman Nabbed at Baja 500 Tech Inspection

TIJUANA, Mexico – The Mexican army has captured Bernardo Cristobal Arellano, alias “El Morete,” henchman of the drug cartel of the Arellano Felix brothers, while he was at the Score Baja 500 car races in Ensenada, Baja California, according to military officials.

The military said that “El Morete” was nabbed Friday in an operation coordinated with the authorities of this state bordering on the United States after being tipped off by an anonymous phone call.

They said that his capture took place while the cars competing in the sporting event were having a mechanical checkup.

Arellano Mejia worked directly with Raydel Rosalio Lopez Uriarte, alias “El Muletas,” with whom he coordinated the movement of drugs to the United States and whom he supplied with arms and vehicles.

The man in custody is related to Jorge Humberto Acosta Gallegos, alias “El Leches,” in charge of the operation in Tecate, who worked with the head of another cell of the Arellano Felix cartel, previously known as the Tijuana cartel, and with Teodoro Garcia Semental, alias “El Teo” or “Tres Letras.”

“El Morete” is under investigation for the murder of three police officers of the Tecate municipality.

When “El Morete” was nabbed, the military seized small amounts of marijuana and crystal from him, along with a pistol and a short machine gun, two bullet clips, 17 caliber 9mm shells, $21 and an SUV.

“El Morete” was brought to the installations of Tijuana’s Morelos Barracks.

Mexican authorities arrested Bernardo Cristobal Arellano Mejia Saturday.

He is reportedly a brother in the Arrellano Felix drug cartel. He was getting ready to participate in the Baja 500 off road race in Ensenada at the time of his arrest. Known as El Morete, the suspect is reportedly in charge of purchasing vehicles and weapons in the United States, and transporting them to the cartel in Baja California.

He is also allegedly part of the drug smuggling activities in the Tecate area. With most of the Arrellano Felix family behind bars, the cartel is currently run by Teodoro Garcia Simental.

The 41st Score Tecate Baja 500 was eventually won by NASCAR driver Robby Gordon.

TIJUANA -- A key liuetenant for the Arellano Félix drug cartel suspected in the deaths of three police officers was arrested Friday in Ensenada, the Mexican military announced yesterday.

Meanwhile, state authorities said the bodies of two men were found yesterday in Tijuana, one of them with a message held down by a rock believed to be from drug traffickers.

In a bulletin, SEDENA, Mexico's defense department, said the military had captured Bernardo Cristóbal Arellano Mejía, nickanmed “El Morete” (The Bruise), believed to run the Tecate operation of the Arellano Félix brothers.

The bulletin said that Arellano Mejía was believed responsible for the deaths of three police officers in Tecate but did not say when they killed or or give any details.

He was arrested Friday on Ensenada's main boulevard during the mechanical inspection of the vehicles participating in the Baja 500 off-road race, which began yesterday morning.

Arellano Mejía was arrested in a Ford F150, the bulletin said, he was armed with an MP-5 machine-gun, and a .9 mm pistol and was carrying 117 grams of marijuana and 95 grams crystal meth. A witness, however, said he was arrested as he stood in the crowd of people watching the racers.

The bulletin said that Arellano Mejía was believed responsible for the deaths of three police officers in Tecate but did not say when they killed or or give any details.

Staff at the military base in Tijuana said they had no additional information beyond what was in the bulletin.

Meanwhile, the state attorney general's office announced that authorities found at 11:50 p.m. Friday the body of man in a drainage canal in the westside colonia of Manuel Peres. The man, not yet identified, had been shot multiple times.

About two hours later, the body of another man was discoverd in the northeastern neighborhood fo Garita de Otay. His head was wrapped in a plastic bag and his hands and feet were bound. A concrete rock was found on top of the body that held up a sign bearing a “narcomessage,” the statement said.
