Hughes Upgrades in Baja ?


Any Horror stories to share regarding the Hughes "Self-Install" upgrades from the 4000/6000 Modems to the HN7000S ?

So far, everyone I know personally who has made the change has run into problems, including Transmitter incompatibilities.

Upgrading is extremely simple. There is a set of instructions that comes along with the new modem, and if followed, nothing out of line should happen.

If however, you get stuck, and if you have the knowledge, go in and re-register your system.

If it comes to that, and if you are already on SM5, I suggest you try to use Transponder 990. It will hook up nicely and then when it restarts will go to the original transponder to which it was assigned.

While I agree that the "Process" is not a challenging one for you, myself or many others, I think that "No Brainer" is a little over-the-top.

The people I'm familiar with may not have a tech-level of computer literacy as we might, BUT they are fairly intelligent.

I also think that Hughes (and not the vendors) is somewhat negligent in promoting the self-upgrade process without some caveats regarding potential problems.

I elected not to get the upgraded modem...the old one was working fine, there is no way to get Hughes 'support' for a new nor an old modem here anyway, and...duh...I doubted the self-upgrade process would be as simple as touted (as this thread is now addressing)
also I have no reliable USA address that they could have mailed the new modem to anyway. (thanks to the person who offered to bring it down though)
hey, why mess with something that works in exchange for a free latest and greatest???

you guessed it...because exactly 10 days after the expiration date for ordering the upgrade...I can no longer connect. I suspect Hughes may simply have, oops, cut off the old modems. or some such. my choices are few...find someone with a Satellite phone and go through trying to get customer support, or get someone with a cell phone and a vhf somewhere they can get cell reception (this would involve a dinghy and three way to customer service with my sitting beside a vhf trying to follow relayed messages if all the stars are aligned), OR, behind door number three, cross my fingers and hope that my problem will be solved by a local entrepaneur who is planning cell/phone/internet service for my village via some telmex scheme I cannot even begin to comprehend. I'm going for number three I think. I may have a satellite internet system for sale this fall if anyone is interested!

ps forgot to say that there is no cell phone coverage locally, otherwise this doesn't make sense.
