Mulege Malecon Update?

We were in Mulege in 2007 and saw construction going on for a malecon along the river. What is the status of this?
Anyone have a photo update?

Bob H, It's neat along river. From the bridge down to the lighthouse on both the north and south side. Padrons on the north and the pig roast on the south, can't remember the name of the pig roast crew.

Come see Yourself

The North River Road to the Lighthouse is being seriously worked: from Saul's its graded (bumps smoothed) with 2-foot wide "sidewalks" in place; further east the rock wall is being blasted, widening the road; the road is way-smooth in front of Huerta Don Chano with what appears to be a division (don't know the intention here).

There is still a very, very narrow dirt single-lane across the river, north to south. The two relatively tiny (10 inch) aluminum culverts are still serving to drain the natural spring water from up-river out into the brackish river/sea water.

I understand that the mouth of the river at the lighthouse is deeper. However, upriver boats and kayaks must be exited and dragged over ankle-deep water. The other day I saw a man walk across the river from the Oasis to the other side.

The weather is hot and humid and the Sea of Cortez and Bay of Conception is fabulous for dips, skinny and otherwise.

Post pictures, Mulegena, cooling off in the water. ;)
Regarding the river road on the North side, I hope they put in speed bumps. They were speeding way too fast before the improvements. It has to be worse now.:)

edited to correct jumpy finger typo syndrome.

A malecon along the river banks would really be cool!

Well, the Governor of BCS wants to retire on the north side @ Loma Azul.
Any more question why the road is done so fancy?
And speed bumps are the most rediculous thing in the world. For Mexicans only good to speed up, brake hard, get over the bump (topes) and speed up again. And all that with the broken exhaust - which is mandatory in Mexico)

Drove the north river road out to El Patron last week... there was some construction for a divided road east of town and west of El Patron, but very limited... maybe 1000 feet long... some signs that there will be a sidewalk... but nothing much more than the way it was 2 years ago when we were last there.

If they don't die outright, they are left on the road crying that horrible cry that unmistakably means it is severely and/or fatally injured. Children walk and play along that road. Families walk along that road. It is just a matter of time before someone is hit by a speeding car. Or one is going to lose control and crash into the river. I mean, they go 60-70MPH, kicking up clouds of dust. Alcohol is often involved. It happens all day and all night. Martyman and Squid. Would you want this happening if you and your family lived along this stretch of road?

The fishcamp family down near the most heavily populated part of the road has had his own speedbump there for years.

Speed bumps do slow down speeders. These are locals who are speeding. Once the speed bumps are installed they will learn quickly to slow down.

Lived on the north side of the river about 50 feet from the road at Don Chano's. On weekends the noise from passing vehicles with loud radio/cd's blasting would wake me up sometimes. But vehicles going 60 or 70 MPH, no way!.:O:D

Regarding Speed Bumps/Topes: yes, I personally hate them, BUT Tony's right-- sleeping policemen are inexpensive and effective and should be placed in front of Huerta Don Chano's as its wide-open and smooth-sailing there.

Regarding the weather in Mulege right now: tell me how to post a picture and I'll do so on another thread so not to hijack this 'un, ok?

I totally agree: There got dogs killed on the North Side of the river. (Same on the South side of the river. So in Loreto and Ensenada) IT IS A SHAME! THESE DOGS HAVE NO RESPECT!
And the kids playing there. Yep, I have seen kids there ----- playing next to the river. Now this question is hitting me: What is more dangerous to these kids: A car (not all are speeding) or falling into the river??? My answer is: As the parents do not take care of their kids, they might be kidnapped by a stranger.
Yes, but a real problem is still all the families walking along that road. Oh man, this is the only road in all over Baja where families are walking. And only here can it happen that a car (which one? The speeding one or the slow one) might loose control and hit the entire family. That happens of course every time! We only can hope that that car is crashing into the river without hitting a family before.
BUT: that road is there for centuries. The river just one foot away in some places and no drunk ever crashed into the river. Amazing! (well there is a Gringo Lady (Lady?) she drove her Alfa Romeo into the river while 'drunk like a skunk'.
I for sure have a completely different problem with that road. When speed bumps are installed any passenger plane falling out of the sky might hit a car -- as the car goes slow. Nobody can deny that the risk is much higher to be hit by an airplane falling out of the sky when driving slow.
When driving fast, the risk is much lower.
It is like the bullet trying to hit a moving target.
And what about the risk of that Mexican car > the one with the bad shocks and flat tires which is common in Mexico < jumping across a speed bump and loosing control and then hitting a family, or two families, or maybe three?
No my friend S:fire::fire:peed bumps are a high risk for everybody.

Hey all... thanks for the update. Guess there is progress even if it is slow going. The river looks so nice and much cleaner than I can ever remember!

Well, it seems like I am overruled regarding the speed bump idea. I can see Squid's point that they could actually cause a car to veer into a family, or someone.

So...it's just a matter of time. :( I sure hope I don't see or hear it).

Cypress refutes my 60-70 MPH estimate. I live on the south side of the river and have witnessed the speeding. Whereas we can't see the speedometer, I still hold to my estimate regarding some speeders. If Cypress doubts it. Fine! I don't care.

I know. It sounds unbelievable, but whenever I see them traveling at an excessive rate of speed, I think to myself, no way! I hold my breath and watch in horror and hope for the best. It is very irresponsible and reckless. This is the stretch directly across from The Orchard, approaching the Y or just leaving it.

Okay, then how long is that little stretch of road work? I would be surprised if it was more than 1000'. Unless there is a section that is out of sight from the road between Hwy. 1 and El Patron. I am talking about the street one drives on to El Patron.... through town and along the east end of the river.

Yes David, same stretch...but just last year, post chubasco, that was a really bad stretch of road...so what APPEARS to be just a 1000' stretch is really more like a 3000' stretch because they've done so much work to the damaged portion of the road....at one point, this past winter, they had a backhoe scraping away at a big rock where the road comes down to the river for weeks at a time...just a backhoe...scraping away at this big ass rock...for weeks.....so yeah, they've really improved the road over there but unless you watched the process, you can't see it.
